Transgender Ego Fragility and Suicidality

This comment was left a few hours ago:
The commenter states they became suicidal after merely coming across this blog, indicating they're both transgender and suffering from acute mental distress. In working closely with several US psychologists who are fighting the psychiatric system from within, comments such as these smack of the shear mental fragility of transgender patients that bloggers/feminists see over and over and over. Fortunately, documenting comments such as these are proving highly informative to ethical psychologists.

Psychologists and therapists are starting to ask themselves the same questions we are. If the transgender mind is so fragile that the existence of a differing opinion from a stranger in another part of the world sends them into suicidality; is the source of the mental distress/illness something other than gender dysphoria? And in cases where it may be GD, if the ego is too fragile it cannot safely traverse a world where people have differing opinions/notions/experiences that might run counter to theirs, then perhaps a different course of therapy would be wiser before transition is allowed.

  1. its not just a differing opinion, and you are not just one person. Its social oppression, many people treat trans people the way that you do. you are a cyberbully. Many young teens commit suicide due to this phenomenon, its not concentrated to trans people. And yes, you absolutely contribute to the suicide of young transpeople with your horrible bile. Don't think for a second that you dont.

  3. Finally! I was astonished when I heard that they were letting Bradley Manning of WikiLeaks fame, currently resident in some federal prison for like forever, was being allowed to "transition". The last I had heard, this is a couple years ago, and I thought psychiatrists had to approve sex changes. I now understand that you just go to the "pro trans" shrink and they sign off regardless. But the reason I was shocked about Manning was someone who was just convicted of espionage might very well be, wait for it, depressed. Or anxious. So logic alone would dictate that somebody who's just been handed a lengthy prison sentence especially for something that they don't consider a crime and then decides they have to change their sex might be inventing a Happy Save. I suspect psychiatry has its own name for this. But we all know it, you're depressed and you convince yourself that if X happened (like Y fell in love with you) then Everything Would Be OK. Instead of falling in love it's Change My Sex.

Something few people outside of medicine are aware of is the Differential Diagnosis. This is a process doctors are supposed to go through, and virtually never do, in any diagnosis where they say 'OK the patient has these symptoms, now what are all the diseases that those symptoms occur in?' If you do the Differential Diagnosis for gender dysphoria/GID it certainly would include anxiety disorders. And depression.

Some, all?, of us who are critical of Transgenderism don't take the view that the people are just assholes. We think there's something else wrong with them. Something serious. Something they deserve help with.

    1. You deserve help. You don't know what you are talking about. Most trans people have to be seen by two mental health care professionals, for at least half a year before they see a physician, depending on state law/standards of care. Most of these mental health care practitioners are unfamiliar with trans people before one walks into their office. Hence, "Protrans" shrinks are something most of us have never heard of. The correctional system has its own process and limitations. You don't know what you're talking about.

Is this some kind of joke? There are online "gender therapists" who will do online chat or Skype therapy for anyone with a valid credit or debit card. I probably could get my pet dog diagnosed with "gender dysphoria" because I could say anything online, and they would agree. That is, if my credit card is good. I don't have "gender dysphoria", but I bet I could fool any online Skype or chat therapist into thinking that I do.

Some doctors prescribe hormones on an informed consent basis. That is, the patient gets a form with a long list of side effects of hormones to read, and they sign it.

As to surgery, most surgeons require a letter from a psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist before sex reassignment surgery (it really doesn't change one's sex). If they can't find a therapist in the U.S. to sign off on surgery, Thailand is always an option. I can't imagine any therapist crazy enough to say that suspected serial killer of women and sociopathic criminal, Douglas, "Donna", Perry is mentally stable. Apparently, even sociopaths can get sex reassignment surgery. Just fly to Thailand or Mexico.

  5. No its not a joke. I'm speaking as someone who has gone through the process. Like I say, it varies from place to place, and in some cases from specialist to specialist. Getting diagnosed is way different than getting a letter of referral. Yes a lot will continue without referral but only after hormones have been initiated. You have no idea what you are saying.

I'm not buying into this p.c. bull that says that trans activists care about kids. Do you want to know why? Well, here goes because I'm going to tell it the way it is. Kids are political pawns to these people. Trans* organizations need children to obscure the fact that their organizations are, by and large, run and controlled by cross dressing, middle aged, heterosexual males. The man who was so tearful over the real tragedy of the loss of Josh Alcorn is a man who was convicted of molesting a girl. We love kids, but we are going to turn a blind eye to child abusers. Allison Woolbert, Dennis Wayne Woolbert, the man originally behind the so-called "Leelah's Law" to ban "transgender conversion therapy" petition was convicted of sexually assaulting a girl. The trans* organization he worked for couldn't decide whether or not to fire him, and never thought of checking his background. I imagine the child he sexually assaulted gets depressed. I imagine the young girl that transgender registered sex offender, Paula Witherspoon, molested gets depressed too. I imagine the women who had to share a restroom with him feel depressed. What about the teenage girls who had to see Colleen Francis and "her male genitalia". That would make me depressed.

A message from Allison Woolbert. If the14 year old girl that he sexually assaulted ever commits suicide, will he be blamed? If not, he should be blamed.

After the mutilated Belgian woman's euthanasia, one would think that they wouldn't even mention the word depression or suicide. I want to know why surgeons pushed sex reassignment surgery on a severely depressed woman. Nancy/Nathan Verhelst felt so depressed after botched "top surgery" and "bottom surgery" that she begged a doctor to euthanize her. Based on her background, she probably was too emotionally fragile to undergo such drastic surgery. What did trans organizations do after she was so depressed that she begged a doctor to euthanize her? Nothing, it was business as usual.

If you are depressed, please, please get help. Having said, I'm not buying this insulting, manipulative behavior.

By the way, one more thing...

The "Leelah's law" doesn't change the fact that most rational people view the sterilization of children as a human rights abuse. As to "conversion therapy", we know who is being "converted". In Iran, gay men and lesbians are being converted via sex reassignment surgery. By claiming that gay and lesbian children are transgender and need to be chemically sterilized, they are, in fact, converting them.

    According to, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18981931

“Most children with gender dysphoria will not remain gender dysphoric after puberty. Children with persistent GID are characterized by more extreme gender dysphoria in childhood than children with desisting gender dysphoria. With regard to sexual orientation, the most likely outcome of childhood GID is homosexuality or bisexuality.”

    1. But this ignores the high degree of co-morbidity amongst trans. Trans has a strong correlation with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Axis II personality disorders, Axis I disorders (especially those involving mood disregulation), all over and above the usual depression you expect to see with people who feel ostracized.

Trans also shares traits with body perception-based disorders such as anorexia and Body Integrity Identity Disorder which may implicate the body mapping functions in the brain to some degree.

      Delete
    2. The "strong correlation with Autism Spectrum Disorders" and transgenderism is completely faulty, same as the notion of "born in the wrong body". DYKES comprise the majority of females being transitioned (or storty straights girls). Many DYKES are naturally good at sports/math/maps/science/computers/carpentry/monosyllable/cerebral etc etc-things automatically associated with males. By BROADENING autism, this allows for greater diagnosis of A(S)D among lesbians who transition. Geek math or science girls might not be the norm, but they certainly arent abnormal!

Having grown up VERY close to someone who's truly autistic and been around others with autism, no true autistic person has the interest in society to internalize gender norms! The autistic have greater things on their minds than "do these pants make me look like a chick"?

Anorexia, clearly another social disorder suffered primarily by females, created by males/male gaze/male systems.

Psychiatrics has yet to bother psychoanalyzing BIID on individual cases. Like autogynephiles, each case has a personal starting point.

More than 99% of ALL DSM created diagnosis are NOT organic.

  8. Suicidality is Abuser Logic 101. It's the most craven form of emotional manipulation and a disservice to those who struggle with serious, real-world depression. It is a standard tactic of people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Histrionic Personality Disorder. It's also a hallmark of Borderline Personality Disorder. No surprise at the strong correlation between personality disorders and trans.

    1. True that! I'm sick of fragile egos breaking apart from the "violence" of pronoun use. Victims of actual violence can often muster resilence, but transtrenders seem to be highly neurotic.

The Womens Center I was once on the board of has changed its name. It is no longer a women's centre because of the delicate trans ego. We had a trans woman on the board, we were a trans inclusive space... Still, it wasn't enough. The transtrenders who so wanted to be women had their sensibilities offended by the name Women's Center. Thus women and our historic fight for that space were erased. Because of selfish narcissistic individualistic identity politics turned mental illness; brought to you by Big Pharma on behalf of the patriarchy.

    2. True that! How can they be so fragile as to break down when all that they have to deal with is hatred from all sides, disregard for their physical and mental health, and people who insist that they are nothing but abominations. They need to toughen up!

Seriously though, it's easy to say that they are just being neurotic or that they must have some other disorder that makes them so sensitive, but the reality is that transgender people deal with some serious crap every day, from all angles. The fact that the straw that breaks the camel's back might just be an internet comment doesn't mean that they are abusers or anything close.

It's kind of awful for you to try to decide who's emotional distress or triggers are valid and whose aren't, especially when discussing a group who goes into the conversation with a much higher rate of "serious, real-world depression" than most. It could just be that they are actual people who deal with more problems than the average person, and as a result reach their limits more often.

Just a thought, since nobody else seems to have considered it.

    3. A lot of women who "deal with serious crap every day, from all angles" and have since childhood are given the diagnosis of "borderline personality disorder" if they don't get better with treatment, are "difficult" or their darling clinicians just don't like them. I am referring to so-called "cis" women as well as trans.

    4. Ah, no problem then.

As long as we can agree that environmental stresses and general social intolerance suffered over the course of a lifetime are valid reasons for apparent "fragile egos" there isn't really anything more to discuss. It means that we know that its not a matter of fragility brought on my acute mental illness, but a hopelessness brought on by seeing a world (and internet) full of people who loudly and repeatedly let you know that they despise you and/or think that you're insane.

As long as we know why comments and blogs can be harmful, we shouldn't have any trouble acknowledging why comments like the above make sense.

    6. Here's the thing. We all agree "social intolerance" causes distress. However, it seems like a very big deal to me that the things that upset trans people so much are demonstrably untrue. They are out of touch with reality and asking the whole world to repeat back to them their false beliefs. As random internet commenters, why in the hell should we? And as for doctors and therapists, they have a legal and moral obligation to tell their patients the truth and give them reasonable expectations for treatment. YOU CAN NEVER BECOME THE OPPOSITE SEX. THERE IS NO SURGERY THAT CAN DO ANYTHING BUT DESTROY WORKING SEX ORGANS. They are not replaced with Anything resembling the complex systems of either male or female reproductive organs. If a doctor or therapist refuses to tell their patient this , they are no longer performing medicine. Simply surgery. The distress from trans people comes from a loss of control, an inability to control reality and control what other people believe and then say. Its unreasonable, unhealthy , and no matter how much distress it causes them we can't change reality for them. They must learn, with help, to accept reality. Otherwise their life choices NO MATTER WHAT will end in severe distress.

Here we go with the whiney spiel about transgender people being the most oppressed people in the whole world. Old rich white men like Bruce Jenner who spent a boat load of money on plastic surgery and a new wardrobe of fancy dresses are more oppressed than poor women in Bangladesh. Jenner is totally clueless, and he will never understand what it means to be a woman.

Women deal with oppression and violence all the time, and it often starts when they are girls. Girls and women are beaten, raped, assaulted, murdered, tortured, forced into marriages, sold into prostitution, etc. Millions of women have been mutilated through foot binding, FGM, and other barbaric practices. During the burning times, women were tortured and burned alive. At least 163 million female fetuses have been aborted in India and China, and despite being illegal it still continues. This is 163 million missing girls who weren't allowed to take their first breath. That is far more than the number of Jewish people, disabled, homosexuals, and gypsies killed by the Nazis. The violence committed against the female sex would take this whole blog and a thousand of other blogs to list and categorize.

  16. I'm confused. The FTM sites are rife with "Guy to Guy Advise" on how to appropriate what is the conventional ideal of a man, how to talk like one, pee like one, position your ballcap like one, etc etc etc.
I work with many men in a blue coller format, have men in my family, see and hear their behaviors constantly and well there seems to be a huge disconnect in regards to FTMs penchant for whiny, complicated emotional delicacy and the Male Icon they idolize and wish to emulate.
It is litmus to me that they are not "born the wrong sex" but are attaching neurosis to a concept of being transgendered. It is fueled hotly by the embedded message of male privilege, social media cultism, youthful angst, and creating a fashion statement. Yep that's right. I said it.

  17. Dear Dirt, I am a straight woman, 50's age group, rather conservative, and never thought I would find myself on the same side of issues with the radical feminist or lesbian communities - but here I am, with you on the so-called "trans" and gender dysphoria issues. I started researching alternative views after seeing that photo of Bruce Jenner in drag on the cover of Vanity Fair and everyone fawning and sucking up to him; it seemed insane that they went along with this man's claim that he "is" a woman - and I wanted to know if there was anyone like me, who rejected these claims - and found blogs like gendertrender, which lead me to your blog. I have long believed that just because a person prefers the clothing styles, grooming habits, interests, occupations or pastimes typically associated with the other sex, doesn't mean that person "really is" the other sex. That's ridiculous! And if a person is sexually attracted to her or his own sex, that doesn't mean that person "really is" the other sex. They shouldn't be labeled as "transgender" needing hormones or surgery to "correct" them. If they feel depressed or confused because they are different than what society expects of them, they should be counseled that the culture is causing the problem, they are not the problem. The solution is not "changing the sex" but helping the person to accept who they are. The notion that sex can be changed by surgery or drugs is ludicrous. Giving hormones and hormone blockers to children is monstrous. So is the terrible idea that "changing the sex" of a "tomboy" girl or "effeminate" boy is a cure for homosexuality. I guess it's better in their eyes to poison someone with hormones that are incompatible with their natural bodies and to mutilate their healthy organs with surgery, than to let them grow up and possibly become homosexual. How foolish for any feminist to accept the insulting idea of a "female brain" causing men to cross-dress or fantasize about having breasts or whatever they do as autogynephiles. I have learned a lot of other things from your blog, and from others, and am continuing to learn. Perhaps my terminology seems old-fashioned, so be it. You are one of the only people who is applying reason and logic to this whole situation. I hope you will accept my comment, even if I am outside your usual audience or affiliation. I admire your efforts to get out this message.
