Transgender & Bisexual Suicide Rates Skewing Gay/Lesbian Mental Health Ethos & Public Awareness

Without getting into the multifarious reasons Transgender and Bisexual Politics are not Gay and Lesbian Politics or Gay and Lesbian needs/lives share little in common with Transgender and Bisexual needs/lives, this post will briefly focus on ONE: Suicide!

There is ever increasing information and evidence that the BisexualTrans of the LGBT communities suffer from extreme suicidal wishes and suicide rates. A few examples in a growing sea of short and long term studies:

and
The high suicide rates among Transgendered and Bisexuals pose several critical issues for Gays and Lesbians. Firstly, they lead the general public to believe Gays and Lesbians as a group are mentally unstable/suicidal. These beliefs can negatively affect us from gaining basic legal rights/protections, impacting jobs, housing, state marriage legalization, personal/interpersonal relationships, including with our own families. Secondly, these suicide rates give us (Gays/Lesbians) inaccurate information about OUR community. As a result, how can leaders in the Gay/Lesbian and medical authorities properly address mental health issues/needs and suicidal feelings/attempts/deaths among Gays and Lesbians?

Perhaps the high rate of suicide among Transgender and Bisexuals is precisely because their different needs arent specifically being addressed either for the same reasons?

Regardless, if the Gay and Lesbian (sexual orientation) community is to grow and prosper, our needs MUST be directly addressed, instead of currently being spread out among other communities, improperly understood or ignored outright via the growing LGBT....qurstv etc.

  1. Wow, I never knew that about bisexuals.
    I wonder why that is?

I can understand with trans people, I've done research and seen the kind of turmoil they can experience. But I thought even bisexuality was more acceptable than being gay. I wonder what's going on.

  2. @12:15 I think it's because they are constantly confused and do not become any proper representation. Most of the characters on the television are very stereotyped heterosexuals, nowadays most of them get at least one normal gay or lesbian character and when we are lucky, someone who disrespects the gender norms a bit. But bisexuals? The only represantation they get are experimentig teenage girls, who kissed a girl and liked it. If a man experimented, he ain't no man in society's eyes anymore. So, bi women are confused and immature and bi men are either non-existent or "actually gay". Bisexuals are constantly judged - when someone (especially a man) has many partners of the same gender, it's considered normal. But when someone dates a guy one month and a woman the next, it's considered weird, they are told to finally "choose a side" and considered either straight or gay, based on the gender of the person they're currently dating. Most of the bisexuals I know report feeling a high peer pressure and often when in a long-term relationship don't say anything when labeled as gay or straight.

  3. I think it's because, for trans at least, they spend their lives wishing they were something they're not. The gay/lesbian friends I have, have said (if we've even discussed it, which mostly we have not) they were troubled at first, for a very brief period, then accepted and embraced who they were. This is very different from the trans experience. I compare it to race. If you are ! say black, and spend your whole life wishing you were white, you will likely be miserable. You also will probably not get much sympathy from other blacks, if fact, you would probably inspire antipathy. Now imagine the self hating black person undergoing skin lightening procedures, and cosmetic surgery to anglicize any African features, then declaring themselves to be white and demanding changes to legal documents. People of all races would call that crazy. Or how about a blind person who spends their life hating their condition? After a while, would we not say with love--you must accept this or your life will be ruined? Notice, it would not be the blindness that ruined their life, but the lack of acceptance of reality. We surely wouldn't give them a drivers license and call them sighted if they insisted they in fact we're sighted. We do people who feel transsexual no favor by "playing along" with their delusion. It is out of love and compassion I promote self acceptance and a rejection of the mainstream trans theory.
Love you Dirt! I think you help a lot of people. You're writing has helped me.

  4. Dirt, I have problems with this post for several reasons.

(1.) First of all, I don't trust the biased statistics regarding suicide that is coming from transgender sources.

(2.) Second, I don't think that transgender people have higher suicide rates than gay men and lesbians.

(3.) Third, trans sources are very fond of transing the dead. In fact, they have gotten very good at transing dead people. That is, applying the word transgender to anyone who is different, and steps outside the box of traditional sex roles. There are numerous examples of this practice. For example, Teena Brandon suddenly became transgender after her death. For all we know, she could have been a butch lesbian, or just a very emotionally damaged young woman. Another example is the tragic suicide of Josh Alcorn who, for all we know, was either just a very emotionally distraught young man, or really gay.

They take any suicide and use it to "prove" that transgender people have higher suicide rates. Truth be told, we don't know. Are suicide rates of transgender people higher than suicide rates of the general population? I would say they are, but so are suicide rates among gay men and lesbians.

  5. The National Gay/Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) did a big study a few years ago on bisexual health. They found that - like the first anon says - people had assumed that bisexuals' results would be between straight people and gays/lesbians.

But in a number of cases, bisexuals' health issues were noticeably worse than gays and lesbians. One of the findings was that many health professionals and counselors say "LGBT" on their websites but all their training is about gays and lesbians. So (for example) a bisexual man might come in for depression but have a so-called LGBT therapist telling him he's actually a gay man in denial and not treating his actual problem.

Wow! That is amazing. This homophobic organization did a "study".

Unfortunately, it means diddly squat. The poor trans and bisexual folks have it bad.

Am I supposed to be impressed that the transgender run Gay and Lesbian Task Force did some kind of study? Most mainstream LGBT organizations are controlled by heterosexual male "lesbians" who "transition" in mid-life. These are the same people who tell actual lesbians what they can and can't do on their privately owned land. Even the conservative religious right doesn't do this.

I don't have anything against bisexual people. I could care less what bisexual people do. The worst homophobia that I've recently witnessed is coming from transgender controlled mainstream gay and lesbian organizations. They put any and everything before gay men and lesbians. From the utterly lesbian phobic "Cotton Ceiling" to the attack on Michigan Women's Music Festival, I can say with all certainty that lesbians mean nothing to them. They only tolerate lesbians if they do as they are told. As for gay men, I wonder how long it will be before they become obsolete and are discarded just like lesbians.

For every instance in which this might happen, there are twice as many instances in which lesbians are told that they really are biseuxal, and need to try penis. In reality, it's usually the other way. I'm known several lesbians who are too ashamed to say they are lesbian. They say they are bisexual instead. The same might apply to gay men.

  10. So, you'd like more accurate reporting of statistics? Yes, that would be great. Correlated with actual mental illness, drug use, HIV rates would be great too. so we can we what's causal and what's just co-morbid.

I just gay men could say that the poz guys are dirtying our stats too. But that would be cruel.

  12. All these stats are used, on every side, for propaganda. Best to ignore them.

  13. It's great how bis always get splashed with some kind of shit from you retarded monosexuals, no matter from where it comes. Lesbians attacking women who don't share their sexual preferences? It's bisexuals who are cock-loving sluts. Gay men being perverts and mental as hell? It's bisexuals the ones who are mentally ill. Someone spreading aids? IT'S THE BISEXUALS FOR SURE AGAIN! And so on. Bisexuals -specially if they are women- are the punching bag of this circus of a community full of horny, self-control lacking irresponsible dumb fucks.

Glad I'm not a crazy penis-jelly lesbian and I hate men for the shit they do everyday to this world instead of for stealing my women, god. This is what I get for coming into a blog managed by a lesbian and believing she'll be able to keep herself from start throwing shit to any women that isn't like them. You truly are something else.
