State Sanctioned Murder of a Transman-Just the Beginning? You Betcha!

A Belgian trans female at the age of only 44 has been murdered by a Belgian government euthanasia program. Was she terminally ill you might ask? No. She was terminally different. A difference she at this point in her trans life couldnt see past and one her country cared not to help her see through.

Her trans feelings like anyone's, developed from an overwhelming Gender Straight Jacket, imposed by both a female hating mother ("...'If only you had been a boy', my mother complained.") and a society that "celebrated" males, usually at the expense of females, just like her mother did. I place no blame on the mother, she merely inhaled the same misogyny her daughter had and in equal degree. We may be conditioned to think that a parent's love is unconditional, but any female growing up in a house where a male or males also existed knows full well that that isnt true.

We are also conditioned to believe a parent's love for us is unconditional, but were that true, parents wouldnt be rushing to have their 3 or 4 year old transitioned because he or she likes the wrong clothes, toys, friends, hair cuts etc! Nor would unconditionally loving parents give medical permission for their teen child to have trans hormones or trans surgeries. That isnt love, that is disgust and shame of their child! And at the end of it that kid, whether 3 or 14 or 40 is still trying to get their parent/s to love/respect/be proud of them, conditionally of course! There isnt a parent alive that would ALLOW their child, regardless of age to transition IF that or those parents loved their child unconditionally! Unconditionally loving parents see their children through difficult times, they DO NOT throw them into the fire! But where parents fail us, mistreat us, abuse us, the state is suppose to step in, pick up the slack, at least some of it, not douse the fire with gasoline till we're extinguished!

Nancy's family failed her, yes, BUT her country KILLED her! Her country, not so different than each of ours, agreed Nancy was a "monster" and so rid itself of a human life that didnt fit its criteria for (female) human, although she DID fit its criteria for extermination! Transition itself was paved by the very same legal and medical systems that murdered Nancy, paved to put those like Nancy on the road to normal, but as Bruce Cockburn sang "the trouble with normal/ is it always gets worse." We have gone in the space of a few decades to transitioning female fetishizers believed to be gay men, to transitioning them along with gay men and lesbians, to transitioning young adult gays and lesbians, to transitioning gay and lesbian youth, to transitioning children under the age of FIVE, to state sanctified murdering of those who have transitioned but could not adapt to their new government issued normal.

The ONLY reason transition has EVER been excepted by larger society is because society too believes in fixing those who arent normal. And if they cannot be fixed, society clearly supports killing (removing the offending object) when medically fixing fails! Transition has NEVER been about curing or easing the distress the "trans person" feels, transition has ONLY and remains ONLY about curing the distress SOCIETY feels whenever faced with someone who meets the Gender Straight Jacket's criteria for different!

Different can be a very hard road, fraught with unknowns. But as X or Y become knowns, we may discover a field, a slice of blue sky, a smile or our own unique image in the eyes of another. Normal is a circle leading nowhere, nothing gets in and nothing gets out-alive. EVER!

    Well said, and how true.

Hurry up and bury the body of a tormented soul that a Belgium doctor euthanised. Sweep it under the rug, and forget about it.

If we can't learn from our mistakes, we are surely to repeat our failures.

Dirt, there was a small grammar error. It should have said accepted not excepted. Despite the tiny grammatical error, I completely agree with the gist of the article. The family dynamics point to a troubling childhood in which the mother favored the boys. Rational people can't help but wonder why on earth did the surgeons operate on her. We keep hearing about "gender dysphoria", but I get the sense that her main problem was that she just didn't fit in. Instead of some serious self reflection and work with self esteem and family issues, "transitioning" was pushed as a way to fix her.

The ONLY reason transition has EVER been accepted by larger society is because society too believes in fixing those who aren't normal.

From lobotomies to the hideous procedures designed to cure homosexuality, medicine and psychiatry have always invented ways and methods to fix those who aren't "normal". The field of medicine doesn't exist in a complete cultural vacuum. It's influenced by society. I'm sure they like to think that they are above cultural influences, but history proves them wrong time and time again.

  5. The ONLY reason transition has EVER been accepted by larger society is because society too believes in fixing those who aren't normal.

This is true, and all we have to do is look around and observe what is happening with our own eyes. The "transitioning" of gay men in Iran is well known. Why would one of the most oppressive governments on earth pay for sex reassignment surgery yet still execute homosexuals? If the gay men are surgically altered to look like "women", then society lets them live. It's now a woman and a man, at least by outward appearances, so techinally it's not homosexuality. I read somewhere that Thailand and Iran rank number one and number two in the number of SRS that are performed. With GnRH agonists (puberty suppression), cross gender hormones at age 16, and even in some cases surgery before age 18, western medicine has its own ways of "transitioning" gay men and lesbians.

The ONLY reason transition has EVER been accepted by larger society is because society too believes in fixing those who aren't normal.

Nathan/Nancy was a gender non-conforming female. This alone is enough to make her a social outcast. If she was lesbian, this also marginalized her.

Instead of telling females it's okay to be a beautiful and strong woman who rejects traditonal sex roles, it's more convenient to "fix" them through "transitioning". A girl doesn't fit the perfect, pretty Barbie doll image. We can fix that. How can the surgeons live with themselves knowing full well that they radically altered a healthy female body. They removed her breasts and sewn skin grafts to her female genitalia. FTM "transitiong" is ghastly and brutal. I don't care what anyone says. This is the reality. Confused, frightened, and deeply depressed at the thought of the skin grafts being rejected, she opted for euthanasia. What would happen if necrosis sets in? More surgery, and then maybe more surgery. One arm already bore the scars of tissue being transplanted to the public area. Multiple surgeries are traumatic for anyone, especially a person who is emotionally vulnerable to begin with. "Bottom surgery" on a female doesn't magically create a fully functioning penis, and doctors know it. How can these medical "professionals" live with themselves. Damn them all.

You really must hate the female sex to carve up a healthy female body and then euthanisize her. These are butchers. Damn buthers and murderers.

Is this individual referring to the brains of the doctors or the brain of the victim?

  7. They should have cut the brain open to see how it works ..

    Is this person for real?

    Dear Dr. Frankenstein:

Nathan/Nancy was physically healthy before all the surgeries. She didn't have a terminal illness.

They surgically removed her healthy breasts. That didn't completely fix her.

The doctors took skin and tissue from her arm and fashioned a "penis" that was about to rot off. Of course, who wouldn't be depressed by this ghastly thought.

The poor soul was so tormented that a doctor willingly euthanisized her.

Now, this person comes along and suggests a post mortem exam of the brain. Cut that open too. I agree that we do need to examine the brains of some people. Start with the doctors.

A human being is dead. Literally killed by a doctor. Put down like an animal.

  9. According to the newspaper articles I read on this story, Belgium is considering allowing people under 18 to have euthanasia. This is sheer hypocrisy. Many teenagers are depressed and outgrow it later. Will Belgium help depressed teens end their life? They probably will, because the system is crazy, and maybe some of the euthanasia doctors enjoy killing people.

I disagree. It's high time women were brought to task for their participation patriarchy and misogyny. You can blame men/society all you want but these women have brain in their heads.

Most women do not say those things to their daughters. My mother never ever said those things to me.

There are plenty of women out there who gladly participate in patriarchy/misogyny because it gets them the approval from men that they crave. It's time they were criticized for it especially by other women.

Constantly making excuses for theses assholes does nothing for women and girls. Nothing. Women need to stop being enablers!!

Women can never trust each other if we're not allowed to callout horrific behaviour and lay responsibility and blame! Not allowing criticism of other women just infantilizes women forever.

The mother might have been a wicked witch for all I know. A lot of people grow up in dysfunctional families. This is what we do know.

(1.) Nathan/Nancy had no terminal illness. She was physically healthy before the sex reassignment surgery.

(2.) The mother wasn't the one who performed the multiple surgeries that resulted in Nathan/Nancy feeling shocked, disappointed, and depressed with how she looked after all the surgeries.

"I was ready to celebrate my new birth. But when I looked in the mirror, I was disgusted with myself. My new breasts did not match my expectations and my new penis had symptoms of rejection...I do not want to be a monster"

  14. There are several issues that I would like to address.

(1.) First, I want to strike at the heart of this truly sad and tragic event by asking the question that people are too timid to discuss. If this poor, emotionally wounded soul had an abusive, horrific childhood, and was psychologically fragile to begin with then why did the surgeons perform the multiple surgeries involved in sex reassignment? I've read several comments from trans blogs that go as far as to suggest the mother should have been the one euthanized. The double mastectomy and tissue and skin grafts, etc. needed to create a "penis" are difficult for an emotionally stable person to endure. These are major surgeries that radically alter healthy anatomy. Since skin grafts from the arm were used, I'm assuming Nathan/Nancy underwent phalloplasty instead of metoidioplasty. People really need to understand how difficult it is to surgically create a "penis" on biological female. It is fashioned from skin flaps (tissue, skin, veins, arteries, nerves from a donor site). Of course, scarring occurs, and the arm can take months to heal. Below is an excellent detailed description of all the pain involved. Although this person says she, rather he, has no regrets, the intense pain

    http://ftmwillingtohelp.tumblr.com/

"I had seen pictures from the arm graft so I sort of knew what to expect, yet the pictures I had seen where months post surgery, so I had no idea what to expect when they took everything off.

I quietly sat as the nurse removed the the bandages, my skin was stained yellow underneath the foam from the cream they had put on, and finally the moment of truth arrived, the nurse cut off the foam around the staples which she would remove after.

I sat there, bile rising in my throat, I was horrified, it was horrible, it looked disgusting. The layer of skin was so thin I could see the white outline of the bone in my arm, the skin was a red purple colour and the bits of the skin graft that overlapped onto the unaffected parts of my arm was black.

The nurse started smiling, I couldnt understand why, I was horrified, mortified at how horrible it looked. I started crying. I tried to fight it, Im not someone that cried easily yet I couldnt help myself, it was horrible."

I am very pleased that this individual eventually recovered, and despite the slight limp, is doing well. This person went through hell. It takes an emotionally strong person to go through all this. FTM "bottom surgery" often requires multiple surgeries and it's ghastly.

Why on earth would doctors do all this to someone who probably isn't too emotionally stable to begin with? This is a huge adjustment to make for any person. "Transitioning" certainly isn't something that can be easily undone. The only way to undo it is with more surgery, and these individuals have already undergone several surgeries.

There are also ethical issues of profound importance. Should the field of medicine perform sex reassignment surgery on emotionally vulnerable people? This definitely appears to be the case with Nathan/Nancy Verhelst. Some articles state that the mother clearly favored the brothers. For Nancy, was "transitioning" a way to a new life, or an escape from the constant messages she received that told her girls aren't as valued as boys? Girls receive these subtle and not so subtle messages from society all the time. Nancy was experiencing this both from society and her own family. Again, I ask this question. Why was "transition" seen as the only option for this person? Someone needs to address the proverbial elephant in the room.

    ReplyDelete
  15. (2.) I guess it's clear by now that sex reassignment surgery failed miserably in healing this deeply troubled person. Now, I'm going to ask another question that no one dares to even whisper. Why won't transgender activists/doctors/plastic surgeons/ gender clinics/ trans websites, etc. admit that they all have been rather eager to push the idea of "transitioning" on people. Don't tell me it isn't going on because we know full well it's happening. I'm not afraid to lay part of the blame for this horrific tragedy on the very people who are all too eager to suggest hormones and surgery before anything else. There are 16 and 17 year old girls who are already saying that they are "pre-everything" meaning pre-surgery and hormones. Even 13 and 14 year old girls are talking about "T". They simply call testosterone "T", and make countless youtube videos of their first shot of "T" as if it's some kind of birthday celebration. How can the transgender community in good conscience say that it doesn't plant the idea of "transitioning" in these young minds when it promotes GnRH agonists (puberty suppression) for "gender dyshphoric" 12 and 13 year old kids? At every major transgender health workshop or conference such as the large Philadelphia Trans Health Conference there are always plastic surgeons (SRS surgery) and endocrinologists (GnRH agonists).

Transgender activists/trans websites/ plastic surgeons, etc. plant the idea of "transitioning" in the minds of these impressionable, and often psychologically vulnerable people. When something unfortunate and just plain sad and pathetic occurs such as euthanizing a human post "transitioning", what do they do? Do they rethink what they are doing? Does anyone rethink what they are doing? No, their answer is MORE "transitioning". Under no circumstances do we ever change our policy on who does and doesn't get SRS.

I say they all have blood on their hands, especially the doctors who perform these barbaric procedures on emotionally fragile people.

    ReplyDelete
  16. (3.) I also want to discuss euthanasia. I can see how this might be a humane approach for an elderly person who is in terribly pain, infirmed, and isn't expected to live very long. If a person is on the verge of death and doesn't want to be hooked up to machines, I can understand peacefully ending one's life. I can also see how euthanasia might be a humane way to end one's life if a person has a terminal illness such as cancer.

Nathan/Nancy Verhelst was euthanized because of "unbearable psychological suffering." She had no major health issues. While she was deeply depressed after the sex reassignment surgeries and the surgeries themselves were no doubt excruciating painful, she had no terminal illness. Perhaps she was afraid of more surgeries, and she states that it looked as if the grafts were being rejected. At any rate, I have difficulty accepting the idea of euthanizing someone because of "unbearable psychological suffering." This wasn't a ninety year old woman or a cancer patient with six months to live.

Bioethicist and NBC News contributor Arthur Caplan, Ph.D., said he has been following Verhelst's case with concern.

"When you move away from the realm of terminal illness, toward judgments about suffering, you are starting down a very dangerous path and one that's extremely slippery," said Caplan, who is a professor at NYU Langone Medical Center.

"Suffering is very subjective; you do not have any line or boundary. Who's to say, 'That's enough suffering?' And making an assessment on that is very, very hard," he said.

Rita Marker, executive director of Patients Rights Council, a secular anti-euthanasia group based in the U.S., said Verhelst's case represented a "precipitous cliff."

"Protecting the barriers between caring for someone and killing them is very important. And if suicide is offered to vulnerable people, like in this case, it puts them at tremendous risk," she told NBC News.

    http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/10/05/20803178-painless-death-or-precipitous-cliff-transsexual-chooses-euthanasia-after-failed-operation?lite

Nathan/Nancy needed intense long term counseling, especially to help her heal from the emotional wounds inflicted on her by her family and a society that says girls who aren't pretty little princesses are freaks. She needed to be loved and valued as a girl, and told that girls can do anything.

I completely agree with dirt's statement:

Was she terminally ill you might ask? No. She was terminally different.

  19. Nathan is not suffering anymore and thats the main thing and hes away from that hideous creature that calls its self a mother..

Trans activists and their assorted minions are blaming the mother. The mother is "that hideous creature."

Apparently, the father and the brothers had no influence whatsoever. I don't know if it's true, but I read that Nathan/Nancy was sexually abused.

For the sake of argument, perhaps the mother is "that hideous creature." If a person has a "hideous creature for a mother, doesn't it make sense that he or she would have some serious underlying emotional problems. Please answer this question. Why did the surgeons perform sex reassignment surgery on an emotionally fragile person? The sex reassignment surgery only made Nathan/Nancy more depressed. Indeed, she says that she was disappointed with the way her chest looked, and the skin grafts shown signs of rejection. Nathan/Nancy is quoted as saying, "But when I looked in the mirror, I was disgusted with myself." Did the double mastectomy and skin grafts that were fashioned to create a "penis" which, by the way, shown signs of necrosis, improve her mental health?

Nathan is not suffering anymore and thats the main thing and hes away from that hideous creature that calls its self a mother..

The real "hideous creatures" are the doctors who mutilated this female and then euthanized her.

If Nathan/Nancy ran like hell away from these hideous doctors, she might be alive today.

It's a historical fact that the most hideous and revolting of evils are usually done by men in white coats, or men in power who, with precise precision and state permission, act like they are gods.

Her mom only loved her sons so Nancy wanted to be a boy too. But her mom rejected her as a boy.
She was such a hurt soul, how could she get a green light for her transition? It's all so obvious.

  23. If you are any kind of bad woman, your behavior can be excused because men made you do it. Men invented everything, including you and your decisions. You have no autonomy, no choices, and no responsibility for your actions. You are completely free...from being fully human. This mother is only a victim, not a perpetrator. Doesn't Dirt's view of womanhood sound enticing? You can do and say whatever you want and it won't be your fault! PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESTION. WHY WAS SEX REASSIGNMENT SURGERY PERFORMED ON A PYCHOLOGICALLY FRAGILE AND DAMAGED PERSON? IT ONLY MADE NATHAN/NANCY MORE DEPRESSED.

Because (1.) Nancy/Nathan's mother rejected her and gave more attention and love to the brothers, and (2.) the family dynamics appeared to be dysfunctional in many ways WAS REASON ENOUGH NOT TO PUSH SEX REASSIGNMENT SURGERY.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The mutilation and subsequent euthanasia of Nathan/Nancy Verhelss is another reason why sex reassignment surgery should be legislated out of existence. I'm not talking about transgender identified individuals per se. Transgender identified people are worthy or respect. Rather, I'm talking about barbaric surgical procedures that cannot magically cure an emotionally damaged person. First of all, these procedures don't actually change one's sex. If a person is born a biological female, she will never fully be male. We know this, but people are supposed to go along with the fantasy at the risk of being verbally harassed for being politically incorrect. Nothing like this occurs in other organisms that share at least 95-99% of the same DNA as humans. PRIMATES DON'T CHANGE THEIR SEX. Second, the extent to which healthy female breasts, genitals, and reproductive systems are radically altered is astounding. Few people really understand what these procedures entail. These are ghastly by anyone's standards. If we are wrong about FTM "transitioning" it does resemble female genital mutilation. Sex reassignment surgery is not something that can be easily undone. Third, this truly pathetic and tragic case is further proof that physicians don't carefully screen the proper candidates for these radical procedures. Fourth, there is no way to clearly distinguish between internalized misogyny and cultural influences from the "gender dysphoria". Girls are universally devalued. If it's true that Nancy/Nathan felt rejected by her mother because she wasn't born a boy, what does it say about a society that would rather "transition" (multiple surgeries and hormones) such a girl rather than address the self-esteem issues and deeply engrained misogyny? It is utterly misogynistic on its face. Surgically altering females who don't fit culturally dictated standards is nothing new. Indeed, it goes back thousands of years.

  34. This poor person suffered complex abuse from her family. Her mother evidently could have valued her more, and if not able to protect her from the sexual abuse she suffered from the male members of her family, could perhaps have helped her develop a greater sense of her self worth to be able to survive it better. I say perhaps, because apart from the internalised misogyny her mother's reported actions seem to reveal, I don't know enough about the mother's own situation to know how far she could take responsibility for her daughter's care. (The reported statement "if only you'd been a boy" is almost exactly what my mother said to me because 'It's better to be the mother of 4 boys, of course". But I wasn't sexually abused, and got a lot of love as well as misogyny in my upbringing).

Attempting to make the mother alone the author of all her daughter's troubles is in itself misogynistic: mothers are rarely the all-powerful goddesses we would all like to be nurtured and protected by (any mother knows this about herself, surely?) A mother is just one woman.

What damaged her beyond repair and then junked her was not a single individual with all an individual's weaknesses and splendour but a profession which is supposed to have checks and controls, to use evidence every step of the way, and to take as the first principle the 'First, do no harm' of the Hippocratic oath.

That the medical and psychiatric professions, sought to 'fix her' rather than attempt to heal her wounds (as if she was the source of her problems, rather than her personal experience of a particularly damaging upbringing) and sold her a packet which rests on such dodgy evidential foundations as SRS is an indictment. Using surgery to 'fix' a psychological problem is, you would think, rather illogical, no?

I'm reminded how a few years ago there was much talk in the right wing (but non-religious) media about 'the search for the gay gene' which would, according even to some scientists, allow the 'problem of homosexuality to be "fixed"' - by, as it turned out, selectively aborting foetuses that seemed to carry it.

It turns out that there is no gay gene (genetics really isn't that simple: if it was, the 40% of my genes which are identical with those of a banana would lead to 40% of me being covered with thick yellow peel).

This fix proved illusory and some people are still disappointed about that. It seems to me as if transitioning is the new fix - and it's not a one-off treatment but a whole series of things.

Please don't deflect all the rage and sadness this terrible story causes onto one woman. She could have done a better job, I think. But she didn't try to erase a damaged woman's reality with further damage.
