  1. Really sad. They're all obviously females affected negatively by the media and our culture's expectations of women.

  2. In my family, many (but not all) of the females have short hair, wear pants, no make-up etc and they engage in a wide variety of activities.

Raised in that kind of environment, having a "gender conflict" seems kind of strange. So I wonder if these girls have even one female in their lives to act as a role model who is NOT a bimbo barbie doll? Because if it were normal for some women to wear short hair, no make-up etc in their own families, then it seems like these girls wouldn't feel so much pressure to transition.

I REALLY wonder what kind of home life they have. And if they do have women in their lives like mine, does everyone else in the family shun those women?

  3. Having a less misogynistic/gender straight jacketed home will most certainly help. But being surrounded by a society/pop media that promotes self hatred in females and enforces the gender straight jacket it is easy to see how our young girls/young women are opting out of womanhood.

  4. Watching these is really really profound. I've only been through the first 3 so far.

  5. I also think these girls kind of "infect" eachother, especially over the internet. They really seem to have a desire to be hetero/"normal."

I remember 20- 25 years ago those of us Lesbians (and Gay men)especially in rural areas trying to come out and find any kind of community, friendly spaces, even books would have killed for the possibilities the youth(and we)have today with the internet. But it seems to also be a double-edged sword.

  6. As one of the young people pictured, I'd just like to say that no woman in my family is a "bimbo barbie doll" - both sides of my family come from farming backgrounds. My mother has short hair, rarely wears makeup. Didn't go for the safe route of marrying a farmer from her community, instead she went to Harvard and has done exceptionally well in the civil service. She's certainly not shunned, she's the head of our family now that my grandmother has passed away.
Then of course I have my sister and her wife, two staunch aunts... I'm not short of inspiring female role models.

Why should I get to comment? Cos you have my mugshot up there. It's kind of like an invite.

  7. Being trans is cooler than being butch. No offense to any butch presenting women on here, but that stereotype of butch women being overweight, unattractive, ugly clothes, etc is very true and I see them every day in my daily life.

Not saying that anyone transitions to be "cool", but if you are a masculine identified female, your choices are be a Gross Butch Dyke or Anything Else. A lot of people are going to choose ANYTHING ELSE.

Looking cool is a bad reason to do anything, especially as dramatic and irreversible as a medical sex change. But think about it from the perspective of a teenage, twenty-something lesbian: You can either become a mini-YouTube celebrity and at least LOOK like a cute boy. Or you can get an ugly crew cut, some baggy cargo pants, and put in your application to work at Home Depot. Oh, and don't forget gaining that extra 30 pounds that many butch lesbians seem to carry around.

Before you get defensive, ask yourself: Who would want to do that?

  8. the above comment is absurd
sure dirt is a bit rough-looking
i'm personally a thin androgynous female who doesn't think ftm's look any 'cooler' than ugly butch dykes
ftm's look rather silly to me and i can feel their unease

  9. That is you personally.

I'm just saying that these completely unattractive, mannish lesbians- typically fat, with their Newt Gingrich haircuts are not going to get anybody to want to be/ look like them. Maybe they are wonderful people on the inside, and that's awesome, but looking like that is totally unappealing to younger, more hip lesbians.

So you have these older, hideous women who are trying to recruit younger masculine lesbians to not transition and be like them, it's just not going to happen.

This isn't an attack on butches for looking however they want to look. I'm offering insight they might not have considered. Dirt can blog all she wants, but teenage/20-something lesbians aren't stupid. They can see that butch women are disrespected and shunned by society. Transition isn't the answer, but like I said, if it's a choice between looking like Dirt, or Anything Else- people are going to at least explore Anything Else first. Those YouTube FTM's are trendy, young, hip. Copying your favorite YouTube transguy is no different than dressing like your favorite rock star.

The Butch Lifestyle just isn't attractive to younger lesbians, that is why so many jump at transition.

  10. well that's too bad if non-gender-conforming young women think that those are their only two options

  11. Anon 11:42

Same here with the positive female role models. I thought I was trans at one stage; I lived with undiagnosed OCD and had two psychotic episodes - and still the medical profession tried to shoehorn me into a GID diagnosis. Honestly, with all the positive role models in the world, when the medical profession itself is tainted by gender pseudoscience I can fully understand the confusion that leaves people in. Hope you stick around.

  12. "Dirt can blog all she wants, but teenage/20-something lesbians aren't stupid. "

Well, perhaps they ARE, in a way, if how you look matters that much to them:

"completely unattractive, mannish lesbians- typically fat, with their Newt Gingrich haircuts are not going to get anybody to want to be/ look like them"

Unattractive based on WHOSE criteria? THe ridiculous criteria of society, that's who.

As a fat bald butch dyke, what such dykes said to ME when I was young and stupid was -- there IS another option, you can go tell the femininity police to take a running jump, and wear what the hell you want!

Saying not looking like societys steotypes doesn't win you anyn friends is hardly news, but you don't win by just picking a different stereotype from the two boxes available (masculine/feminine), that is kind of the whole point, and if these trendy young women knew something about feminism instead, they'd realise that the game is loaded against them right from the start, and the only sane option is not to play.

Here's to hags harridans, and the 'ugly, fat, butch bitches' that is all that traditional society can see of us...........

  13. "if it's a choice between looking like Dirt, or Anything Else- people are going to at least explore Anything Else first. "

I would have chosen look like Dirt at that age, but then I had come across feminism!

God, this fat ugly butch dyke stuff is so OLD -- my younger self responded by going for the whole thing, overalls included, because ANY of that is better than stupid femininity!

Give me overalls, a buzz-cut, and a power tool any day -- why ASSUME that todays young women AREN'T able to see that as well, once it is pointed out to them.

  14. I'm not assuming. I am actually a gender non-conforming person in my twenties and I can see where these transitioners are coming from.

Some butch identified commenters on this site can't understand: "Why don't these young girls stay female and just be butch like us?" I'm just trying to explain that.

You are out of touch if you don't remember how important attractiveness/ image is to you in your teens and twenties.

    ReplyDelete
  15. if you're not already fat with newt gingeich hair why would deciding to accept being taken for female suddenly make you fat with newt gingrich hair?

  16. "You are out of touch if you don't remember how important attractiveness/ image is to you in your teens and twenties."

I thought it was crap then, and still do. But then I was a fat, soon to come out dyke going to Oxford, who had heard of feminism..........

The level of fat phobia on here is astounding -- as I said before, you'd think that fat is a feminist issue had never happened.

  17. Well obesity is generally unhealthy. Humans are usually uneasy around signs of bad health, like someone with rotten teeth or something- I'm not sure that type of reaction can be changed. Though as people get fatter and fatter I suppose there will be more sympathy (it's just too bad that life spans will shorten this way)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Of course I don't think women should be judged more harshly than men in this matter.

  19. "Well obesity is generally unhealthy. Humans are usually uneasy around signs of bad health..."

BOLLOCKS. The venus of Willendorf refutes that, and current female obsession with being thin would have been considered damagingly unhealthy until recently.

As I said fat phobia writ large, with some sort of unhealthy-person panic being used to explain it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. "Of course I don't think women should be judged more harshly than men in this matter."

Why should we be judged AT ALL? Why should anyone elses presumed health or ill-health be cause for judgement?

It really is FAT-phobia writ large, with people being judged because it is taken as ugly, a sign of moral degeneracy, weak will, low self-esteem etc etc..........

  21. Per the male medical machine, obesity equals 30lbs "over weight". The only thing unhealthy about 30lbs is not fitting into the size zero the same machine deems as fit, fit based solely on fuckability per the male gaze.
