The Reversal of Feminist Gains (an article)

From the article:

Her point was that progress has ground to a near halt. Women hold less than 18% of the seats in Congress and 25% in the state legislature; women compose less than 3% of the heads of Fortune 1000 companies, 16% of the members of the Boards of Directors of Fortune 500 companies; and, 15% of top executives and 8% of top earners. Few women make partner at top law firms and a “vanishingly small number of law firms have women as managing partners”; among new physicians, “women earned almost $17,000 a year less than their male counterparts”; and, “shockingly… the pay gap between men and women increased almost fivefold during the ten year period from 1999-2008.” Not to mention the stunning point historian Judith Bennett has made of how the medieval woman worker’s wages, while “certainly not [woman’s] modern counterpart,” “nevertheless haunt our modern ones: 71 per cent in 1363… 75 percent in 2002.”

The article.

This is all part and parcel of the clear conservative/queer backlash against feminist gains made particularly in the late 60's and 70's.

This is bullshit and you know it. If you don't know it you are pretty damn dense.

  2. "Gender" is the implementation of the sex-caste system which privileges males and subordinates females. Transgenders celebrate this anti-female caste system. They love it!
Transgender is the most female-hating philosophy ever invented.

  3. Back in the seventies boys could wear hippy dresses and have long hair and earrings and be named "sunflower". Now they would be called transgender. Definitely a backlash against the feminist gains of the 70's.

  4. Can someone please explain the anti- feminist caste system?

  5. I hate to say this, but part of the 'backslide' is due to women themselves either not fighting their individual battles or choosing other priorities in their lives. Especially when one looks at the types of statistics quoted in this article, i.e. the percentage of women in Congress or as top executives. I work for a Fortune 500 company, one where international mobility is required to move ahead, and I can tell you that very, very few women sign up for that, despite the fact that the packages are actually quite good. There are many reasons they don't, many of them good reasons, in fact, but at the end of the day it is their choice, and ultimately many of them actually feel that they've made the right choice, for themselves, if not for the feminist cause.

  6. Anon@3:01am, and thats exactly what patriarchal structures that shape/take away female "choice" wants you to think, dividing further women from women.

  7. I just walked by the LGBT center (once called 'the gay center') here in Manhattan and there's a poster up advertising an upcoming party- pictured are muscley macho men and the ridiculously feminine drag queen (or 'transgender?') entertainers... this is an example the kind of polarity that the homo world has embraced- pick a side! So backwards.

That poster never said they were a woman.

Anyway, how much more of a victim can you people be? Has it ever occurred to you that many women turned away from feminism because the feminist critique NEVER affords women their own agency? Everything a woman does or doesn't do has been created by the patriarchal machine? If you can never have an original thought without being controlled by the patriarchy, then everything you do in reaction to it is also controlled by the patriarchy. After all, you are not really free if you are living your life in reaction to something or *anything*, are you? Your very anti-trans philosophies are also informed in TOTAL by the patriarchy. If you really want to take it there, you can assume the reason gay people are distrustful and hateful towards transpeople is that we are more powerful as a movement when we all fight together. So there, you have it- you play right into their hands. Like I've said before, you are a perfect stooge for them.

You can start having original thoughts by questioning your own motives and hatefulness. The only thing that's truly radical is love, and you don't love anyone by relieving them of all responsibility for their actions.

  9. " After all, you are not really free if you are living your life in reaction to something or *anything*, are you?" this is a silly argument! You can only try to fight it it you first realise what it is doing. Pretending it doesn't exist, and that you are acting freely, is just conning yourself.

" and you don't love anyone by relieving them of all responsibility for their actions." It not feminists relieving them of responsibility, nor anyone for that matter, just pointing out that the brainwashed may be brainwashed, hence not considering the full spectrum of possibilities when making their choices.

Right. Except *you* don't realize what it is doing.

O please tell me then how feminism has got it wrong? I presume that gender is GOOD for starters..................

  12. I would say that gender IS. Neither good or bad, but that humans use it for social stratification. Not my fault. In my opinion, no major tenet of feminism has got it wrong as far as equality goes, but plenty of feminists have used it to justify personal failings and every other fucking thing. Feminism in it's worst form is like a religious doctrine that allows it's followers to be unaccountable for their actions and words. After all, everything is the fault of men including your own behavior-right?
