Transmen, Weight and the Pressure to Work Out

In just flipping through about 30 TV channels this morning, one thing stood blatantly out-MISOGYNY!

Nearly two thirds of the channels were shows or infomercials geared towards improving women/womens bodies and of those shows, nearly two thirds had to do with weight loss. Whether a pill product, an exercise  product or some type of program diet, all had to do with slimming down and/or reshaping the female body using these products. Whether we like it or not, the constant barrage of negative messages aimed and shot point blank at females, gets under our skin and buries itself into our brains. Nowhere is this more evident than transmen.

Within trans trending there is another trend just as self hating, prominent and displayed all over the likes of YT and the pages of every ftM forum, website, blog or tumbler. The trans trend within trans trending is working out. Not simply exercise for good health benefits, but exercise to reshape the female form. This is self hatred within self hatred. Testosterone therapy may redistribute some body fat, but it will not make you thin, nor will it add tons of manly muscles.

Female transitioners transition as an out to the terrible internalized misogyny and external pressures of being a woman. Many express the horrors of having to live just one more day as a woman. But just like the misogyny that informed their transition, misogyny continues informing how they perceive themselves as transmen. With the same critical eye they judged themselves as women, they judge themselves as transmen and judge other females who transition. This is a VERY female judgment, one based in having been raised female under patriarchal structures. So while transmen sidestep their womanhood, because those patriarchal structures still firmly stand like the erect penis transmen will never own, transmen still continue to punish their bodies which remain imperfectly female.

Transition does absolutely NOTHING to destroy the powers that be, patriarchal powers that teach females self hatred before we're out of the nursery, self hatred that follows women, even after transition.

  1. Dirt? Didn't you do a couple posts regarding muscle building for women who want to reduce the appearance of their breasts?

  2. OMG! People lose weight or workout for themselves. You yourself posted a blog on how to workout to make your breasts look smaller.

It's not misogyny to want to workout and lose weight and to make yourself feel better. Working out is NOT misogyny by any means!!!!

    WTF????

I workout because it makes me feel good and gives me energy throughout the day. I don't do it for no one but myself. Although my girlfriend loves my biceps and abs....Just sayin'

  3. I also remember the "Dirt Workout" posts. I think you are a hypocrite and your "community" is not our community. Your ideas are both archaic and ignorant.

  4. I agree with you on the point of a lot of weight loss programs abeing aimed at women to lower their self esteem, that much is true.

Wanting to work out to appear more male? Eh, i dont do that and the majority of people who work out do it for health reasons.
For a man I conclude that I am quite soft :P I dont like muscles on me anyway. Always reminded me of tumors

  5. We don't work out to transform the female form. That's what we take T for. Geez. Get your facts straight. Those of us that work out do so because we like the way muscles look. In fact, those of us that work out probably did so as women.

  6. good god dirt - your posts go from bad to inaccurate to just plain pathetic. You're really reaching with this one. Not every transman works out with weights, in fact, I doubt a majority does. Some do, yes. But because they enjoy having a strong healthy body - JUST AS MANY WOMEN DO. Health and fitness aren't gendered. Maybe at one time, but men and women work out and build muscle to whatever extent they desire, and it has nothing to do with misogyny. Jeezus. You have some serious issues dirt, and you clearly need help to deal with whatever is at your core, eating away at you.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I have serious issues and yet you're hanging on my every word..lol!

And clearly the post is about the PRESSURE to workout. And btw, it was a transman who asked me to cover this subject. One merely has to look at the hundreds and hundreds of YT, forum posts, websites and tumblers to see this pressure is a SERIOUS issue. Try taking off the rose coloured glasses.

It is no coincidence that a high percent of female transitioners were/are suffering from eating disorders. There is also no lack of ftm groups/communities to verify that also.

  8. It's a pressure for everyone to work out, no matter what your gender. Its not only good for your health might also make the person feel better about themselves. Yea trans guys talk about how they wanna be in shape, most of the male population that gets girls are in shape. The same goes for the younger lesbian crowd. These days most people prefer to be with someone in shape.

  9. Hanging on your every word? Ha! Hardly... just like having a go at all the ignorance and the lies, don't mistake my refusal to be silent in the face of oppression for any fascination with you and your skewed view of feminism.

  11. I'm weak and slow but I have the soul of a world-class athlete. I was born in the wrong body. The Olympic Committee has no right to disrespect my internal identity. They are bigots. They should give me a gold medal. Please sign my petition.

I find it disturbing that a young girl can't be tomboy anymore.. apparently now you're either a girly girl or an ftm. disturbing

  14. Ever since puberty I have been very slim. I always had body issues because of it because I was under weight and couldn't gain it. Finally in my early twenties I got up to a normal weight. I never felt the pressure that most women feel to be slim as I grew up. Since I've transitioned though, I feel so much pressure to be bigger. I would like to be bigger anyhow because I've never liked being so scronny. It would be nice to be able to do it without feeling pressured about it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I am a trans man and a lot of this is true for me, although more pressure from the community to be skinny than to be muscular.

Transition doesn't make any of these messages I've internalized about my weight go away.

  16. Have your own minds then and know your own body. I am comfortable with my body and I know who I am. If anyone questions that then haters gonna hate.
It may suprise you Dirt, If you met me that is. How secure I am in my own skin

  17. "Transition does absolutely NOTHING to destroy the powers that be"

I'm curious why you think transition must be a political act at all.

  18. Dirt, is there anything that can be done to help this poor lost soul? I happened upon her blog and cried when I saw how her breasts were butchered. She thinks she looks good!

    http://transcanadacoyote.blogspot.com/2011/08/eight-weeks-post-surgery.html

I don't understand why these young women hate themselves so much. But self-hatred or not, so-called "surgery" (actually butchery) like this should be illegal.

  19. Dirt, if you want to lose ten pounds of ugly fat, chop off your head!

I highly doubt that any of the comments on here where "women" are flirting with you are real. I think you have no life and make fake profiles all day when you're not working the coffee bar.

    Get over it.
Lesbians don't even care about it any more.
At least not young ones, but honestly I would not date a Grand daddy butch such as yourself.

Nope!!! There aint a damn thing you or Ms. Baker can do to stop a grown adult from making a conscious decision about what there gonna do with THEIR body!!!
You sound like those lunatic anti-abortionist. So I suggest you get yourself a big big box of Kleenex and cry yourself a river...cause there aint a damn thing you can do about it! LOL!!!

  21. Anon@2:2:30am

Yes, clearly butchered. Uneven, nipples look terrible and clearly still quite a bit of breast tissue left, which is quite common. I cant imagine hating myself THAT much.

    dirt

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's only 8 weeks post-op, so what you see as leftover breast tissue, is probably still a combination of swelling and fluid that has not yet re-absorbed. If this were a 2 year post op pic, then I could see you calling it leftover tissue - although as minor as his is, IF he was bothered by it, doing some pushups and dumbbell flys would flatten that out in no time. Jeezus. You girls just never cease to look for things to pick apart.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Common enough that throughout all my time looking at top surgery pics Ive never seen that unless its in the 3 months after the operation.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Whut? I'm a transdude. I don't even like it when transguys are ubermanlymuscular/into working out any more than I like than any other guys who super muscular or obsessed with working out. The expectation for guys to look like superman is unrealistic and unhealthy for culture in general.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The thing Dirt seems to be forgetting here is that *everyone* is under all sorts of pressures to do different things depending on whatever social etc grouping they find themselves in.

I'm sure that as a butch lesbian Dirt has found herself under pressure to act a certain way (and if she hasn't then I could point you towoards many I know who have).

Part of growing up for EVERYONE is learning how to respond to these pressures and hopefully be happy being yourself, though of course many people don't and remain insecure that they don't live up to whatever standard has been set for them by their culture

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think what you're saying is pretty obvious and doesn't really constitude the mark against trans men you seem to think it does. Trans men were raised as women. In our culture women are conditioned in certain ways. Much of this conditioning continues post-trnsition. It's simple as that.

    ReplyDelete
  27. "Trans men were raised as women. In our culture women are conditioned in certain ways. Much of this conditioning continues post-trnsition. It's simple as that."

In short, gender socialization only exists when its convenient for trans people's arguments.

    ReplyDelete
  28. "In short, gender socialization only exists when its convenient for trans people's arguments."

Who ever said gender socialising doesn't exist? Of course it does.

You do know that saying "there is more to gender than socialisation and biology" and saying "there's no such thing as gender socialisation" are two very different statements, don't you?

    ReplyDelete
  29. People who feel they are trans-whatever need someone to teach them to love themselves as they are, not someone who will convince them that they are somehow "trapped in the wrong body" just so they can pay someone good money to mutilate their body.

When will people realize that the whole sex change" industry is a scam?

Like the tobacco industry, they are trying to attract younger and younger customers, sending trannies into schools to edumicate the kids... if you are a girl who likes stereotypical guy things, or a guy who likes stereotypical girls things, then come with us, pay through the nose for treatments, and then spend the rest of your life paying for hormones!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't feel the need or feel pressured to workout by any means. When and if I workout it's because I want to. I feel more energetic if I have a morning workout and it makes me feel good. I don't want to be all muscular, just healthy.

    ReplyDelete

I live in the UK and so got my treatment for free through the NHS... how does that fit into your little conspiricy theory?

  32. "You do know that saying "there is more to gender than socialisation and biology" and saying "there's no such thing as gender socialisation" are two very different statements, don't you?"

Yes, but trans activists often act is if the latter is true, i.e. transwomen throwing a fit whenever feminists point at that they don't have the same experiences as biological females.

Also, I'd like to know what gender IS beyond sex and socialization related to sex. I never seem to give an answer beyond airy-fairy circular definitions like "a man is someone who identifies as a man".

    ReplyDelete
  33. "Yes, but trans activists often act is if the latter is true, i.e. transwomen throwing a fit whenever feminists point at that they don't have the same experiences as biological females."

I think what they're getting annoyed about is the fact that usually when people say this they are using it as a reason why trans women aren't actually women but just "men in dresses" (even if they happen to be wearing dungarees at the time).

If someone pointed out to me that I don't have the same experiances as biological men I would say that that's true, trying to say anything else would just be silly. It's why I call myself a "transman" rather than just a "man".

    ReplyDelete
  34. "Also, I'd like to know what gender IS beyond sex and socialization related to sex. I never seem to give an answer beyond airy-fairy circular definitions like "a man is someone who identifies as a man"."

Ah, it's that MAGIC internal voice (based on some teeny bit of your brain) that tells you repeatedly that you are REALLY a man, and that your breasts should be treated like some sort of cancerous growth..................

As opposed to the internal voice instilled by the patriarchy that tells you pretty much the same shit, except for the bit that tells you your breasts are toys for the boys and must be kept perky if you want to get taken seriously/get a promotion/get a man................

    ReplyDelete
  35. "Ah, it's that MAGIC internal voice (based on some teeny bit of your brain) that tells you repeatedly that you are REALLY a man, and that your breasts should be treated like some sort of cancerous growth.................."

Just because you don't experiance a particular drive that doesn't mean it doesn't exist and that those who do are mentally ill.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Isn't there a transguy named Tristan Skye or something on a natural transition that involves doing workouts to try to "hide" the female form?

Now if Dirt has posts about reducing the appearance of the breasts? What is that all about? Sounds hypocritical. Dirt can you explain that.

  37. @ 11:29 AM

Gender Identity Disorder is a mental illness. I wouldn't mock those who have it but that's its classification.

  38. Question still not answered:

"Also, I'd like to know what gender IS beyond sex and socialization related to sex. I never seem to give an answer beyond airy-fairy circular definitions like "a man is someone who identifies as a man"."

Just that SOME people claim to have some inner voice or innate sense that tells them they are male, or a man, when their biological sex is in apparent disagreement with that inner voice (I say apparent because depends whether you are also believing the gender/sex link or not.)
