Media an Misogyny in the Everyday

What are some of the repetitive misogynistic messages that the media depicts daily? And how do those messages harm us as females?

  1. That being successful as a woman is all about how you look. And that we all love chocolate......

And of course, constantly giving us the purient news about rapes and murders of women by men, and NEVER asking the bloody obvious question as to WHY it is men doing this to women!

(Yes, I know, men can get raped as well, and there are female serial killers as well as male, blah, blah. )

  2. I would go a li'l bit farther on what BadDyke said, and say, "That being a woman is all about how you look."

I never see women on TV who look
like me any more. Or in magazines, or bands... but I see plenty of us on the street.

"Butch women" are everywhere. Straight ones and lesbians too. But if you look around the media, it's as if we don't exist at all. I don't NEED media to make me feel better, and I don't NEED media to portray me in order for me to exist. But it's just WEIRD that for a while we kinda sorta existed with movies like "Bound" and bands like L7 and Rosanne's sometimes-butch sister. But now? Poof. Zip. Nada. Nowhere. Bout the closest thing we got to anyone I can relate to is Gemma on Sons of Anarchy! Sheesh!
Guess I'll just have to talk to the mirror! ; )

Or that it's men doing it, period. Rape is just something that "happens" to women, y'know.

  4. The simple idea that women have to cover their breasts, which totally sexualizes them and fetishizes them.

I remember taking an dance class, early in college, and it was a groovy dance class. The room would get super hot. I was so mad when the guys started taking off their shirts. I get mad all the time about this. It pisses me off. :)

Their answer was that we could take off our shirts if we wanted . They would not put back on their shirts.

I see trans guys showing off their chests all the time. I find it very unpleasant and kinda silly, not necc because of the surgery.... but it's flaunting this gender enforcement down women's throats. It's like, they couldn't do this before, but now they can! Whoo Hoo!

I find it offensive when a man does it, and I find it offensive when a transguy does it.

Women having to cover their breasts is no different from women having to cover their faces.

  5. Rape scenes in movies.

  6. Sillyme - a lot of people from various walks of life do things others find repulsive. It still shouldn't be used as an argument against trans. I transitioned 12 years ago and have NEVER gone shirtless in public because I won't play into the double standard. And I had great top surgery results - for those of you who'll swear that's why I don't go shirtless.

  7. And chiming in on the question - not that a transguy's opinion is desired - but J-Lo's Venus razor commercial - total misogyny. If you use that razor, you will release your inner goddess. Ugh!

  8. Raygunslinger- Do you not want raps to be reported on the news? Yes people get raped. Should it be reported as women deserved it? No. But it is something that happens to both sexes.

Anon at 10:41: I'm not sure where you're from. However in the United States there are several states where women fought for the right to go topless and are free to do so. If you currently live in a state that does not allow you too, then go change it instead of complaining on the internet.

Also I am sick of how the media only seems to show one type of women. The same cookie cutter molds all the time.

  9. "Or that it's men doing it, period. Rape is just something that "happens" to women, y'know."

My best friends husband was raped by his mother for years as well as by his aunt.

I also had an ex girlfriend whose little sister who was raped by a woman. I don't mean just once or twice but repeatedly over years.

It's not just men but yet you only hear about men who rape. Women rape too as I have seen for myself time and time again. Boys don't report being raped by a woman like women report being raped by a man. Hell, women don't report being raped by other women as in my ex's sister's case or my best friend's ex husband's case. It happens way more than what you think or would like to believe.

  10. I believe that both women and men should be able to go outside shirtless but I see commercials where the woman has to be covered up. I don't see anything wrong with breasts being exposed as some men have breasts and I have seen men with bigger breasts than me out in public...yet I can't take my shirt off in public and I am FTM. There are a lot of men who have bigger breasts than me and they get to go outside shirtless yet I can't...what because I'm biologically a female? Not right at all. Over in Europe they aren't as should I say, oppressed as we are in the US. When I went to London a few years back, I saw a few women with no shirts on and they didn't have a care in the world. Do that in the US and you would get a fine for it. It's stupid as hell. I think then if women can't go shirtless, then men with man boobs shouldn't be allowed either. That is ridiculous!

  11. To be a "real" woman...

    * You have to be dumb and "pretty"
    * You have to make less money than the guy you're dating.
    * You have to date men.
    * You have to learn how to keep him and if he leaves its your fault.
    * You are nobody without a man.
    * You have to be thin, love makeup, have long hair, and getting your nails done.
    * You have to take forever in the bathroom pamping yourself.
    * You can't fart. You can't burp. You don't shit.
*Your period is a time of joy where you wan to do the happy dance when it comes (check the stupid commercials)
    * You can't sleep around that'll make you a whore. Men can because that means they're pimps.
    * You can't play contact sports.
    * The only sports you can play are like volleyball, tennis, and track.
    * You can't play boy instruments like bass, guitar, or drums.
    * If you're overweight then nobody will want you. You can be an overweight guy and still win the hot chick (check all the movies. obese girl is like the sexless best friend in every movie.)

Sexualization of rape in films! There like a French film (?) where this woman gets raped for like 9 fucking minutes its done without camera cuts.

    Skimpy clothes for young girls.

I could go on and on.

  12. >WHY it is men doing this to women!

Cause its kinda difficult for women to rape men. Not all men are rapists or could be rapists.
Women are more likely to murder their children.
    Ah man-hate, I hate the man-hate.

I live in Ireland and Ive never seen a woman with her breats out in public unless they were breast feeding or insane.
By insane I mean wearing a bin liner and talking to pigeons insane.

  15. "Cause its kinda difficult for women to rape men." Which implies that they would if they could?

Nope, it's not people that rape people, in the majority of cases, but men that rape women.

Why is the question. And lets not forget all the rape myths........

And lets not forget ageism -- older men can look like the back end of a bus, but still present, with their white hair and paunches, as powerful figures. Women of a similar age are practically invisible, and certainly not seen as figures of authority. Which in at least one case I've read about, is one reason why a female transitioned, because post-menopausal women are seen as useless.

  16. Women are often lurking in the park at night, waiting to rape and maybe murder young men. They come into men's homes and rape them while they're sleeping too.

  17. "Women are often lurking in the park at night, waiting to rape and maybe murder young men. They come into men's homes and rape them while they're sleeping too."

O well, we OBVIOUSLY would if we could, just that we need to go to the gym and bulk up a little first.......

Might I add as another example of misogyny the same ole refrain of 'men get raped as well', 'women can rape as well' whenever anyone dares to point out the blindingly obvious point that it's WOMEN who are afraid of walking home alone at night or living on their own, because we're afraid of being raped by a man, NOT afraid of being raped by a PERSON.

That's it was a man that exposed himself to us girls at my girls school not a woman, that it was a man who exposed himself in the bikesheds at my women-only Oxford college, not a woman, that it was a MAN who climbed into a ground floor room of that same college and raped the female student sleeping inside.............

I'm NOT saying that men don't get raped too, I'm not saying that women can't and don't commit serious sexual assaults and rapes, I'm just pointing out the bleedin' obvious that in the main, it's women and girls being raped by men, and that's who I'm afraid of late at night -- NOT a woman walking on the other side of the street.

  18. It's actually harder and more rare for a woman to rape a grown man. He'd kick her ass. But I have heard cases of women drugging men and raping them. One woman did it and broke the men's penises apparently. Some men find that concept exciting to think about. I find it still sickening. But the numbers are out there. Women are raped by men and women. Men are more often to be raped by men. Check the prisons! There's hardly anything consensual going there.

Female serial killers are rare too. But I wonder if there's any research on this. Because it not innate for men to behavior like that at all. It could be something mentally wrong in the brain. Well obviously you have to be fucked up to want to hurt people like that.

  19. "Because it not innate for men to behavior like that at all. It could be something mentally wrong in the brain. Well obviously you have to be fucked up to want to hurt people like that."

Except this is another common rape myth, that all rapists are sick or insane.

"In a study of 1300 convicted offenders, few were diagnosed as mentally or emotionally ill. Most were well-adjusted but had a greater tendency to express their anger through violence and rage."

There's also some very worrying research that found that amongst male college students, 60%:
“indicated some likelihood of raping or using force in certain circumstances.”
And many didn't class what they were apparently prepared to do counted as rape or sexual assault.

You took what I said a little too literally. I am fully aware of diagnosis for the clinically insane and psychosis. Whenever someone says a person is crazy doesn't mean we are talking about the clinically insane lol. I know all about rape myths.

I've seen that study on college students and I am fully aware that not every person who commits a sick crime is clinically insane or psychotic.

It still doesn't give me the answer of why it happens which is what I am curious about.

  21. Where I'm from you were afraid of everybody at night or when home alone. Man. Woman. Kid. Teen. Whatever. You were at risk. Rape. Rob. Kill. Guys I knew felt safer than women. It wasn't because they were all strong neither but they had guns and were ready to fight. Some girls did the same thing but they were still scared because they knew they were smaller. But at the end of it though there was always some guy pulling strings forcing people to do the dirty work like some thug or a pimp.

    ReplyDelete
  22. "It still doesn't give me the answer of why it happens which is what I am curious about."

Exactly! The elephant in the room, WHY do so many men sexually assault and rape women? Either there are a lot of sick men out there (which isn't a great answer), OR we end up seeing rape and sexual assault as something that even normal men can do given the right circumstances.

If its based in biology, than suggests to me that men are too dangerous to have around in any safe society without some tough safeguards. If its nurture, then we at least have some prospect of doing something about it.

But that's not said, it's just reported AS IF such assaults are 'normal' and unpreventable, and the best response is to tell women not to walk home alone or wear short skirts............

Except when the number of rapes in south Africa, say, gets SOO huge that someone finally does comment on it...........

  23. I think rape during war is the clincher. Soldiers are everyman, they are our fathers, our brothers, our uncles that we love and that love us.

Yet during war, rape is used against the "enemy" like any other weapon. But unlike a gun that is fired through utilizing forethought, an erection doesnt just happen because men think about it. There has to be a trigger, a desire, a "circumstance".

This is what we do not want to admit, that even good men, can and do rape.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Let me add, clearly rape is based in male biology, since it takes biology to achieve an erection, BUT centuries of established male privilege are what has created the rape fears and rape culture ALL females fear from our earliest memories.

Fears that make us edit how we dress, what we say, the company we keep, the times of day/night we walk the street alone, how we interact with male strangers etc etc etc

  25. "clearly rape is based in male biology, since it takes biology to achieve an erection" Although even chemical or physical castration doesn't necessarily stop a rapist, they'll just use something else.

Even taking the most ultra-egalitarian view, that violence and sexual assault and rape is something that ANY human being has the potential for, still doesn't explain the fact that in our current society, the majority of victims are women and children, and the majority of perpetrators are men.

  26. How many times have those chemical castrated used Viagra or the like to get around that pesky softy issue? So yes, I agree, men will find a way to rape, whether with a penis or knife or whatever.

Should read SOME men will find a way - or better yet, RAPISTS will find a way. All men are not rapists. It's these pesky little generalizations that make this blog so inaccurate...

The "fear" you speak of is very American in nature. In my country where crime rates and sexual assault rates are low. Women so not do the majority of those things. Except for walking alone. Theres certain shortcuts people dont walk because they're very dark and secluded. But the majority of that fear you speak of is not as evident in Europe

  29. this is why no one likes lesbians. they are paranoid and stupid. no one likes lesbians, especially militant ones like you. if you hate men so much go live in some deserted island. their are bad men yes, but almost all the men are good. most of the cops are men, most of the paramedics are men. don't put men as just bad. most of the philanthropist are men. men are the biggest givers of money to the poor and needy, not women. you see women as just good little creatures.

  30. anyways, you ain't going NOWHERE with your sexist bullshit. just like Malcom X got NOWHERE with his racist bullshit, but of course he changed quite a lot over time. your shit is soo stupid. if you really want to fight the true patroarch, go to the middle east; the women truly need it there. about the "male medicine machine" shit you talk about. here is something dip shit.

  31. "Already 40% of doctors are women. In the GP surgeries, 42% are female. By 2013, says the two-year review from the Royal College of Physicians, women will make up the majority of GPs and by 2017, hospitals will also be dominated by female doctors".

only retards listen and believe about the bullshit male medicine machine you talk about and i am a man. i look for facts first. oh, here is the link you sexist dickhead.

You speak nothing about why Dirt would have "sexist" views or why Malcolm X had "racist" views or why these women in the Middle East are oppress...that's is being somewhat hypocritical especially when you tell Dirt to do something about it! People may speak but its those who speak more viciously, take horrific actions, and have political power that we should be blasting first! If you put out the fire what do you have left? Ashes. Nothing more.

Belittling Malcolm X's efforts is wrong. He is appreciated by many. Also you already know he changed his heart before he was murdered so calling him a racist is inaccurate.

    @10:19

How on Earth does most philanthropist, cops, paramedics, and money givers being men actually come off like a good thing to you?

That disproportion is not a good thing. I hope you know that.

    @10:25

Women were not always at 40% until recently. The foundation to build upon was established by men. There was a huge lack of women in math and science until after WWII. But I agree the Medical establishment is evolving.
