Michfest, WBW Policy and Lesbians Fighting Back

Michfest is upon us again, but this year there is something in the Michigan air that hasn't been sniffed in decades, the whiff of lesbians taking a SERIOUS stand for the WBW (womyn-born-womyn) policy!

I suspect this is for several reasons: 1) because of the justifiable anger over the various attacks (see here and here)  made by Camp Trans members on Michfest last year. And 2) the more current attack on the WBW policy and the threats made on the life and livelihood of a long time Michfest member.

Many Michfest women who attended Fest last year, while some still fearful of the threats and violence from Camp Trans, have bravely let their anger surpass their fears and have formed a serious group hell bent on maintaining the WBW policy. There is much planned in the fight to keep Michfest what it was intended for, a few days in a private area where women can escape the male gaze and ever so briefly experience freedoms unknown in our daily lives under patriarchy. One such way this brave group of women had lined up for the fight was to have a few T shirts made up in support of WBW policy. This is in effort to counter the many many organized queer straight women and transmen wearing pro transwomen tees who passed out hundreds of flyer's along the same lines at last years event.

A long time Festie who owns and operates a popular gay and lesbian Tshirt company designed a few tees for this years event. The shirts simply said something like 100% WBW, a way to support policy but also a way to embrace the awesomeness of being a woman for a few short days of the year. No sooner were these tees posted on her website when both the website and her Facebook account were bombarded with hate filled comments about her "transphobia".  The woman in question's phone number was found out by these haters, she received many phone calls ranging from hang ups, hate filled messages to being threatened with violence.

That wasnt enough punishment for her supporting the love of women and private women's spaces, no. The trans group behind the hate, contacted PFLAG whom the woman had a standing deal with regarding tees. The Trans group pressured PFLAG to halt their deal with the woman in question. The larger LGBT Press got a hold of the story and questioned why an LGBT member was selling "transphobic" tees! Between the threats of violence from the trans community and the pressure from the LGBT press the woman removed the WBW tees, issued a statement of apology and has now even refused to sell them within the grounds of Michfest.

While this may be a small defeat, (other T shirt designs are already in the works) scores courageous women are coming together to organize many actions aimed at strengthening Michfest's WBW policy, which is long over due! Sharing the female experience with other females sans the male gaze even for a moment is a rarity, not to be cosmetically duplicated by men sporting cheap wigs and Lee Press on Nails in order to please their dicks, intact or mutilated! And the only phobia is the constant Femalephobia coming from the Trans community whenever females seek out a space of our own in which to share the uniqueness of the female experience.

A serious stand on the WBW policy at Michfest has been needed for a long time. I leave with some words from one of the women taking that serious stand:

Those of us who support the intention of MWMF have sat quietly for too long. We believe that our experiences as those assigned female at birth are significant, that growing up as girls is significant and the process by which we claimed our womonhood under the patriarchy is significant. We will be visible and vocal about our right to gather around these experiences en masse this year.

Femalephobes, the fight is on!

We will be Invincible

This bloody road remains a mystery.
This sudden darkness fills the air.
What are we waiting for ?
Won't anybody help us ?
What are we waiting for ?
We can't afford to be innocent
stand up and face the enemy.
It's a do or die situation - we will be invincible.

This shattered dream you cannot justify.
We're gonna scream until we're satisfied.
What are we running for ? We've got the right to be angry.
What are we running for when there's nowhere we can run to anymore ?
We can't afford to be innocent
stand up and face the enemy.
It's a do or die situation - we will be invincible.
And with the power of conviction there is no sacrifice.
It's a do or die situation - we will be invincible.

Won't anybody help us ?
What are we running for when there's nowhere

nowhere we can run to anymore ?
We can't afford to be innocent
stand up and face the enemy.
It's a do or die situation - we will be invincible.
And with the power of conviction there is no sacrifice.
It's a do or die situation - we will be invincible.

We can't afford to be innocent
stand up and face the enemy.
It's a do or die situation - we will be invincible.

  3. Wow. I'm trans, and I'm horrified about what happened, Dirt. I think MWMF should be a space for the women who want that separate space, and I would never dream of invading it or encouraging others to do so. I'm sorry that the woman was forced to stop selling the T shirts, and I wish the trans community would back off of MichFest. It's really not a big tragedy for there to be a WBW-only space for a few days. You actually have my support on this one, Dirt, and I'm not afraid to say that to anyone else, trans or otherwise.

  4. "Anyway, im a gay transguy and im in the procesess of turning her into kind of....a gay lesbian. She call's me her prince."

By "gay lesbian", do you mean like "homosexual man lesbian"?
Yeah, 'cause that's totally a real thing...
If a lesbian can be a homosexual man, then I want to be a lesbian hetero robot unicorn.
Seriously, you need to realize that just because something is true in your head, doesn't mean it's true for real.

  5. As a Transmans, I feel ashamed by what I have just read, I think that this whole issue about trans and some lesbians has gone too far.

These ladies should be allowed to create their sacred space without recieving abuse from certain sections of the trans community which does not include all of us I might add.

I totally understand about the space needed for women to hang out and share experiences within a totally female environment and this should be respected.

I would like to wish all the Women who attend this meeting, a good time and one which will enable the wonderful female souls who attend to blossom in an environment where they can feel at ease, safe and rejunvenated.

  6. Dear Intelligient Butch Lesbian.. I have absolutely no desire to go to Michfest and I never have. I do agree Michfest should be a woman's only space.

However, I think you are one to call the kettle black when you go to FTM's youtube accounts and take their pics without asking. If you want MTF's to excersize healthy boundaries, then you need to start by setting the example of you excersizing healthy boundaries.

I hope you get to go to Michfest this year. If money is the issue I personally would be glad to paypal you a few $$ to help you get there. just post up here that you are wanting to go but cannot afford it and I will send you some $$ on paypal.

  8. I had to google both the camps to find out what you were talking about. I read the whole protest thing from Camp Trans and find them to be unfortunate. Myself and partner are womyn born womyn and even though we haven't camped in about 8 or 9 years and when we did we just went to any campground for a weekend (a week is too long to camp! lol!), if we did want to attend this type of private festival I'd feel uncomfortable knowing there were a bunch of mtf trans all over. Like I couldn't depend on anywhere to be for women only regardless of what they said. I've always said I realize we have to share the public spaces (gay/lesbian bars too unless we're ok with getting kicked out of straight bars and I'm not), but this is no more public than our locker rooms at the gym are supposed to be. I don't want to see penis in there either. "Self-identified" my butt.

The Trans people will wear folks down, though--it's trendy now. They'll have Lady Gaga out there singing "Born This Way" at the gate while they explain how gender is an "identity". It's so rare to find people who don't actually believe that.

  9. At pride women tried to give me flyers and info about a similar event. I have not yet started T or have had top surgery so I understood their mixup. I refused a flyer and they kept pushing it upon me. I politely explained to them I was transgender ftm and that I did not wish to invade this event for lesbian women. They told me I should go and maybe I can find some pride in being a lesbian.
I agree that ftms should not be there. If it is for women who were biologically born women then mtfs should not be there. It's not a big deal to let someone have a few days to enjoy themselves.

  10. Coming back through to thank Dirt for the reader! :-) I received a comment from a person who found me on this blog and I really appreciate anyone who reads me. I mean anyone--my blog has nothing to do with trans issues. All are welcome.

  11. "It's not a big deal to let someone have a few days to enjoy themselves"

Male dominance knows better. Men sense that when women get together outside of a patriarchal context, it IS a big deal because magic starts to happen.

In fact, it's pretty obvious that the reason right-wing and conservative governments fully support the trans agenda is because it legitimates the invasion of eunuchs into female spaces and weaken women's energy.
Women are energy sources and men are not. Patriarchy depends on men's draining of female energy. ANd they have always used eunuchs to invade our spaces.

Keeping men out of women's spaces is a huge thread to the powers that be. HUGE.

So M2F are pawns, who are nothing but men in wigs with stick-on-nails, as dirt so eloquently put it.

PERSONALLY, and this is just me, I don't have a problem with F2M entering women's spaces, but I know others disagree.

  12. "In fact, it's pretty obvious that the reason right-wing and conservative governments fully support the trans agenda is because it legitimates the invasion of eunuchs into female spaces and weaken women's energy."

I'm sorry, but trans people experience no shred of support from the right, no legitimacy, and no encouragement from them, much less "full support."

Trans people who grow up in bible belt areas, conservative families, and the like live in a constant fear for their lives. Merely going outside is a radical act for many. Hatred and prejudice is around every corner, and there is sound statistical information to back this up. (see: Injustice at Every Turn report)

They had to fight tooth and nail just to be taken seriously by a few doctors. Even then, patriarchal attitudes pervade the medical community, to the detriment of this "trans agenda," not to its benefit.

Parroting this blatant falsehood only perpetuates the patriarchy's hate.

  14. I'm sorry Dirt, but its really not. :I
I mean, yeah, places like Iran and Nazi Germany attempt[ed] to implement it as a conversion therapy for gay people. It doesn't[didn't] really work very well, and even in those societies, these people are[were] hated. I'm fairly certain suicide and murder is rampant in these cases.

And yes, I can fully understand how goddamn frustrating it must be for idiots all over to assume butch or even lesbian women are merely trans men waiting to happen. That shit just ain't cool.
But that only betrays their ignorance, not their endorsement.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Someone clearly needs to educate themselves of the history of transition, particularly talk to the MTF's who transitioned in the first few decades of transition. Autogynephiles who had an underground network on what to tell the doctors so they would qualify for transition, and to qualify first and foremost they had to lie and tell the doctors they were GAY!
