  1. Anon,

You cannot change genetics, you can only work with what you have. Some females will gain weight in specific areas, such as their lower bodies (hips/ass/thighs). Unfortunately there are no exercises that "spot reduce".

Now that doesnt mean there arent things you cant do. Question, are you working out now? And are you fit except for your problem areas? If the last question is too person, you can email me.

  2. I am fit but I don't work out and I have what I call a big ass and 3 cm of fat on my belly and hips (like a bike tyre). I thought T would have removed it but not. My mother is overweight but not obese and has also a belly and large fat female hips. I am young (23's) but I fear I will look like her in the future. My father is rather thin with just a beer belly.
I am scared to have taken the worse of them by doing the transition: the fat of my mom and the (starting) baldness of my dad.

  3. Any hints on starting a running regiment? For a job that I am applying, I need to be able to run at least 3 miles consecutive. Also, I need to run 1.5 miles in less than 13 minutes. I have NEVER run, and I don't even know where to start.
I have tried to run but I get tired right away. I am, however, a biker, and I bike at least 12 miles a day. I can also bike for two hours straight (22+ miles) without getting tired.
I am 10 pounds overweight but I go to the gym almost daily, and I am working hard in getting my target weight for my height. I already have lost 15 pounds.
    Anyway, with running... any tips?

Let me preface my answer with first and foremost working on your self esteem. Before everything else, you have to like yourself first.

That said would you be willing to workout? And if so, can you join a gym? If you cant join a gym, I can give you some home cardio tips.

    let me know

  5. Mary,

Can you incorporate the treadmill while you are at the gym? If you can, it would be a mild way to get your knees used to running. You could do a short walking warm up, then a mild jog intermittent with fast paced walks.

Do that for 2 weeks, then gradually for the next 2 weeks, decrease the intermittent walking with straight jogging.

From there do your next 2 weeks, between the treadmill and the road. This should put you in a position to accomplish your running goals.

  6. I have recently begun to work out beyond cardio. I have seriously no upper body strength, so I'm using 5lb weights. When should I switch to a heavier set? And how much heavier? Sorry this is such a basic question, but I have no idea what I'm doing.

And Mary, I'm not sure where to find them, but I know you can download podcasts of running lessons.

  10. Adam,

If you are trying to build muscle, you need a weight that is taxing the muscles you are working on. You should start feeling some fatigue after two sets, and do at least four sets with a rep range of 6-8. I wouldnt increase the weight till you are able to do four sets of eight. Even if that last set is difficult, increase the weight.

  12. Hey Mary -- I've never been much of a runner (understatement), always more of a biker, like yourself. Two things that helped me a lot in the running department were 1)sprints/intervals and 2) running up and down stairs. After a few weeks of that, I found that I could run much longer distances than before. FWIW.
