The Male Medical Machine aka G O D ( a series)

Females have long since and continue to be portrayed as the "weaker sex", weaker both mentally and physically. Because of the portrayed mental weakness, women far out number (past and present) male mental patients in mental facilities and those who seek help out-patiently. Mental illness/weakness attributed to women has also historical been utilized to keep men in power and hold women powerless. This has been accomplished through mental confinement, mental torture and barbaric surgeries. An example from a single mental facility is the Stockton State Hospital in California:

Stockton State Hospital, originally called the California Asylum for the Insane, was built in the 1850s at Stockton, eighty miles east of San Francisco, and by 1950 housed over four thousand patients. It was the first state hospital in California to perform a lobotomy and between March 1947 and June 1954 a total of 232 patients were operated on.

The patients operated on at Stockton ranged in age from 19 to 88. Nearly eighty per cent of them had the diagnosis of dementia praecox (schizophrenia). Eighty-five per cent were women, even though men with the diagnosis of dementia praecox outnumbered women at Stockton. And twelve of the thirteen people who underwent a second lobotomy were women.

Four of the lobotomized women also had their clitoris removed. Braslow quotes from the case history of “Rose”, a young woman who was admitted to Stockton in 1944, underwent a lobotomy five years later, then had her clitoris cauterized twice and finally had all her teeth removed as she bit people.

Cultural norms provided by and enforced by men were and remain the primary factor for "mental illness" in women.

The diagnosis and treatment of women's mental health and illness in the United States have been shaped by cultural values about what constitutes a good and acceptable woman and have been used to punish women who fall outside the norm. In particular, a woman's body and its cycles as well as her adaptation to social roles have been implicated as factors that cause mental illness. As a result of these formulations, specific treatments have been designed "for women only." Generally, these clinical interventions have been directed at women's bodies or have taken the form of verbal prescriptions aimed at helping a woman live a more "feminine" life.
In the mid-nineteenth century, women were judged by the standard of True Womanhood. The True Woman was a faithful wife, a pious servant, and, above all, a good mother. Ironically, biological mothering, so central to a woman's identity as a True Woman, was considered in the nineteenth century to be a cause of insanity. One hypothesis linked insanity to prolonged lactation. One in eleven women diagnosed as "insane" in the 1850s reportedly suffered a nervous breakdown either during or after pregnancy.

Women who strayed too far from the domestic sphere were also considered to be at risk for psychic distress. A woman who overtaxed her delicate sensibilities by engaging in too much intellectual work was subject to "brain strain." Not surprisingly, this same work was not considered to be crazy-making for men, who were felt to have the natural endowments to engage in active intellectual efforts.

Researchers postulated that unfeminine activities caused uterine derangement which in turn caused mental illness.

During this period, two separate treatment approaches were developed specifically for female patients. The belief that an insane woman had something wrong with her "female organs" resulted in treatments such as electrical stimulation of the uterus, clitoral cauterization, and prescribed weight gain to prevent the ovaries from slipping out of place. Women diagnosed with psychological problems were subjected to a form of paternalistic behavior modification. S. Weir Mitchell, the chief proponent of what was called the rest cure, recommended that women who were suffering from emotional exhaustion take to their beds for a period of six weeks to two months. This solution served to make being ill sufficiently aversive so that women would readily return to their roles as wives and mothers.

First-person accounts by women who were institutionalized in insane asylums in the nineteenth century suggest that incarceration in a mental hospital was used as one means of forcing conformity onto women. These women felt that the reason they were declared insane was that they held religious beliefs contrary to those of their families and husbands, owned property coveted by relatives, or held controversial opinions not shared by members of their family. In some states, husbands had the legal authority to commit a wife to an asylum without a doctor's order; thus "unwanted" wives found their way into mental hospitals.

By the 1930s, psychoanalytic theory was a vital force in U.S. psychiatry. Early Freudian theory identified the castration complex and penis envy as core elements in female development. Even her eventual desire to bear a child was seen as a compensation for her lack of a penis. Early theorists speculated that the sexually assertive woman was really a frustrated man, a woman uncomfortable with her own inherently passive position. Lesbianism, which was linked to feminism, was also declared deviant. Freudian psychology defined both narcissism and masochism as particularly feminine disorders. Some psychoanalysts concluded that feminism threatened a woman's happiness, because a woman could not be herself when she was "imitating a man," that is, being assertive. These psychoanalytic explanations of a woman's psyche served to stigmatize and condemn independent and professional women at the time. Despite attempts to modify some of its elements, Freudian theory remained a largely antifemale force in U.S. psychiatry for almost fifty years.

Psychiatric diagnosis and treatment historically have been used as means of social control in the lives of women. Women who deviate from the cultural norm in terms of role, sexual orientation, demeanor, appearance, or race are more likely to be labeled deviant and to receive psychiatric treatment. As late as 1986, in the Revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published and developed by the American Psychiatric Association, two disorders linked to a woman's demeanor and to her female body were still under consideration for inclusion: Late Luteal Phase Dysphoric Disorder (characterized by anxiety, irritability, depression, and affective lability during a specific phase of the menstrual cycle) and Self-defeating Personality Disorder (a variant of the old female "masochism").

And how much "progress" has the male medical machine made? Lets look at the future changes to the DSM due out in 2013 with regards to gender norms and CHILDREN!

A. A marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender, of at least 6 months duration, as manifested by at least 6* of the following indicators (including A1):  [2, 3, 4]
1. a strong desire to be of the other gender or an insistence that he or she is the other gender (or some alternative gender different from one's assigned gender) [5]
2. in boys, a strong preference for cross-dressing or simulating female attire; in girls, a strong preference for wearing only typical masculine clothing and a strong resistance to the wearing of typical feminine clothing [6]
3. a strong preference for cross-gender roles in make-believe or fantasy play [7]
4. a strong preference for the toys, games, or activities typical of the other gender [8]
5. a strong preference for playmates of the other gender [9]
6. in boys, a strong rejection of typically masculine toys, games, and activities and a strong avoidance of rough-and-tumble play; in girls, a strong rejection of typically feminine toys, games, and activities  [10]
7. a strong dislike of one’s sexual anatomy [11]
8. a strong desire for the primary and/or secondary sex characteristics that match one’s experienced gender [12]

The male medical machine has now seen in its omnipotent wisdom to pathologize gender play/norms in CHILDREN and who will be stamped mostly with this ignorant misogynistic "gender incongruent" label? Female children of course! Because females have paid a heavy price for the removal of a few of our shackles, we are more likely, especially as children to break rigid gender norms. Girls are more likely to desire "boy" clothes and "boy" toys, more likely to play with boys, more likely to pretend they are male figures and thus more likely to be labeled, drugged and butchered as "gender incongruent" aka "trans" children.

For all the centuries of portraying females as crazy to render us powerless, for all the backlash against feminism, this monstrosity (gender incongruence) is by far the worse male medical tactic against females. It is an all out if you cant beat us, change us to men!

  1. Ah yes, Freudian theory: because everyone should take the advice of a deranged coke head.

Hundreds of years ago, women were equal to if not greater than men. We can blame Judo-Christian religions for the suppression of women.

    Great post!

  3. It's insane for both boys and girls that gender "crossing" is pathologized.

  4. This stuff is scary!

One thing I've learned from psychiatry: it's not good.

Before it existed, and in countries not yet colonized by this approach (psychotropic drugs mainly), people have been doing very fine mentally, or at least better than we do. Ironically, Japan's situation as in depression and suicides has worsened after the advent of psychiatric methods. Everything is being medicalized, and now even depression and trans feelings are resolved medically without much regard for other, less invasive methods. Everyone is free to do as they please, of course, but psychiatrists basically IMPOSE those drugs on depressed patients, for example.
Why? The simple truth is $$$.

You don't quite have a proper grasp of this issue because you never talk to any of us. I'm afraid the reality of the situation is a bit more insidious than you know.

Many of those kids may very well be expressing being gay at an early age (let's face it, many gays don't tend to fit into the gender box either). Saying they are 'gender incongruent' is the excuse for 'reparative therapy' for all of these kids, not being 'drugged and butchered'.

One of the most prominent advocates of 'reparative' treatment is Kenneth Zucker, the same guy who writes the gender part of the DSM. Zucker has described parents who allow their children to express gender nonconformity as 'swayed by an activist transsexual agenda' and that such should be considered 'some kind of emotional neglect' toward the child.

Zucker's idea of 'repairing' kids is basically to force them into their gender roles, if you didn't catch onto that already. He claims a 90% success rate, stating that only about 10% are still unhappy with their gender and cross-dressing later.

Along with Ray Blanchard, Zucker is one of the most gender role enforcing men in the world today. Ray tends to always have input on the paraphilia part of the DSM, and was the man who equated transsexualism to fetishism in the first place. Blanchard also coined autogynephilia and the 'two types' of transsexual. This time he's likely to be coining the female opposite of autogynephilia, so you FAB ladies who happen to be masculine will get to experience this fun that we've been having.

So in the end, this is really an excuse to eliminate gender nonconformists altogether in the name of eliminating transsexualism. It's even rumored they may be adding cross-dressing to the DSM this time around.

Transsexuals have been at the forefront of opposing this 'reparative' therapy. Others continue to let it go, because they're 'treating transsexuals' and people can feel very negatively about us. This and a lot of other things I know are the reason I'd rather we be working together, instead of fighting with you.

  8. I'm a trans-man so 'obviously' don't always agree with you, but I do bloody well agree with this.

I find it incredibly bigoted in it's very nature, the continued suggestion that toys and activities belong to either gender.

Gender is not about clothes or toys or taste in food or friends or taste in music or movies or any such idiocy.
    Neither is sexuality.

I'm not transitioning because I wanna wear pants or play with boy things. This is something I'm doing for myself. To be more comfortable in my own skin.
I'm not what society would call all that masculine but bollocks to them. I'm not doing this for them.

(Oh and on Freud. Many of his theories are nonsense, yes, but we shouldn't forget that he was the first man to actually listen to his female patients in a time where women were expected to conform to an awful lot of even more fucked up standards than those in more recent memory.)

  9. wow as a Transgendered individual im disturbed that they are going to do this. to me freud was nothing but a sexual pervert and im discusted he is still been used as a source.

it sux the U.S is still the "leading" country for this shit because in my country where our prime minister was voted in by the people is a women and she took/takes great pride in womens rights as do many of the men in this country, they dont care wat gender you are as long as you dont use the 'excuse' but im a women there for i cant work. i have and still work with women who are and will prob always be stronger and better workers then my self and some of if not all of the other men (or equal to).

  10. Men and women should be treated equally. No one should be over the other. As humans we all should be treated equal...Point blank!

Freudian theory is BS! He was as deranged as they come and I can't believe they still use his theories.

At Anom at December 15, 2010 3:57 PM.....I am trans and maybe you are too but there's no need to be an asshole about it! Us older trans men don't need someone like you trying to make things worse for us. If you'd only just read what Dirt is saying in this post and only read into what you want to then maybe you wouldn't have to say ignorant shit....Geeze!

Anyways, ::rolling eyes at anoym's post:: Freud was a sexual deviant and a drug addicted fool. His theories should not still be used in our day and age...Just saying!

  12. While I do believe in the legitimacy of sex and gender not being the same thing...I think that the pathologizing(?) of 'gender incongruency' is bullshit.

Someone with a vagina can express any variety of genders and the identities within them; same goes for someone with a penis or someone with a rarer set of genitals. I hate how it's been made to be some sort of 'illness' to feel that way, 'curable' with hormones and surgery.

I don't agree with 100% of the things you say, Dirt; probably around 30%-40% in honesty is stuff I'm in accordance with; but I do wholeheartedly agree that the medical world victimizes women and makes the gender spectrum something to 'fix' instead of an identity to explore and find peace in.

  13. Trans "treatment" IS reparative therapy and I daily work to change that barbarity.

  14. Dirt, please explain what makes women so much better than men. I'm asking simply because it seems that you say "men = bad, women = good".
Do women have some sort of aura of goodness and light radiation from themselves? Why would a "female medical machine" be better than a male?

Isn't it better if the medical system was for men, women, and all the others? And filled with all kinds of people working in it.

I might be thicker than a yard of lard, but I am not "gender crossing". I'm not a tomboy. I'm just a boy. A weird, Oscar Wilde-y kind of boy, the silent nerdy library junkie type.

I know, it seems weird that boys in female bodies exist as well as tomboys and sissy gays and girls in male bodies, not counting everyone with other souls and other bodies than simply male and female.

I know, I'm shrimpy and weak and you'd kick my bookworm arse in a fight, Dirt. But still: can't you just let people be, let a foppish boy be a foppish boy and still be secure in your butchness?

I wonder: has any trans man hurt you personally? You have so much rage for them, so much hate and anger. Are men really that awful, the lot of them?

It's ridiculous that some toys and some clothes are the measuring instrument for gender. I mean, blue used to be the "girl" colour and pink the "boy" (blue was Virgin Mary's colour and considered calming and soft, while pink was the colour of flesh and also derived from red, a rousing colour). Imagine how weird a person from the past would find the toy aisle: "My god... A-all these boys are growing up with girl items? And the girls with boy items? How confusing, I'm going back to the Medieval ages!"

Dirt, rock on. But please, don't be so angry. I see anger every day (most recently a suicide bombing and a nazi demonstration). Try to spread some joy. You're cool in your own butch way, now stop using pictures of people you haven't asked for permission (it is polite to do so). I've seen faces of friends here. They certainly didn't agree to be called "mutilated women", so please, stop with the hate, mate.

  15. Anon@3:30 pm- Thank you for commenting. It's interesting to hear the perspective of someone who is actually post-lobotomy. Hang in there, and don't forget the bib.

Your "post-lobotomy" comment was just wrong. The person in question was not lobotomized, and people who have been lobotomized have their own challenges to overcome.

I have never taken testosterone, thank Goddess, but what people write about the emotional effects sounds nasty in its own right.

The psychiatric establishment has been pretty eager to prescribe more and more antidepressants and antianxiety pills, brushing aside safety concerns, and brushing aside any standards for proper or improper use. They were intended as short-term aids, to avoid dependency, yet they get prescribed for long-term use. On kids. The idea of psychiatrists prescribing testosterone like they prescribe their other crap just frightens me.

  17. You're also failing to realize, Dirt... they're not just trying to erase us with this childhood 'therapy', they're trying to kill off gays and every gender nonconformist type. That includes butch and femme lesbians. Whether you believe me or not, we have a common enemy in Kenneth Zucker, Ray Blanchard, J. Michael Bailey, and their ilk. And they have input into the DSM psychological manual as we speak. You can bet they'll come out of that enforcing the gender roles on children even harder. This is not good.

  18. [I have never taken testosterone, thank Goddess, but what people write about the emotional effects sounds nasty in its own right.

When I was on my natural testosterone, I was an anti-social, impatient, intolerant, short-tempered, neurotic wreck. There is a tremendous improvement between the man I was and the woman I am today. I would not be going through with this if I did not believe that.

Believe it or not, I was recently censored for challenging people who claimed that psychiatric drugs basically performed miracles for them; saved their lives, etc. People are far too dependent on and trusting of that system.

[The idea of psychiatrists prescribing testosterone like they prescribe their other crap just frightens me.]

Given some of the reactions Dirt looks to be getting, I'm starting to wonder if testosterone isn't going around far too much now...

  19. Lobotomized!Anon, what on earth are you talking about? My brain is intact and well. I may not be neurotypical, but my brain is fine and I am fine. I haven't been lobotomized, I have Asperger's Syndrome. A sliiiight difference there, one could say.

I don't understand what you mean. Can you please explain further, elaborate a bit? Was there something about my language that made you think I had been lobotomized?

I'm sorry if I have misunderstood you, I don't mean to cause a fuss. I hope I haven't offended anyone now, and if I have, it is an accidentm so don't get mad, okay?

Cheers, Dirt. Merry winter-holiday-thingie, eat food, stay warm, etc. And please, ask people before you post their images. It is common courtesy, is it not?
